floor choice help

I need to replace the carpet in both our dining room and study which are each adjacent to the foyer which has solid hardwood. The dining room is also adjacent to the kitchen which has ceramic tile. What would look the best in the dining room? In the study? Engineered hardwood, LVP, or carpet? Thank you.

Hi. Never put 2 different hardwood looks next to each other. So, no lvp or engineered hardwood.

My first recommendation would be to use the hardwood from the front hall in the dr and office. it appears to be oak. Yes, you'd have to match the stain and likely get all 3 spaces refinished.

Alternately, you can replace with carpet, if the budget does not allow for hardwood.

On Houzz, most people seem to like continuing flooring as much as possible.

If you can match (or replace) the wood in the foyer, that would be the best.

Otherwise, I would probably go back with the same carpet so that you don't add a fourth flooring..

Or possibly continue to save your money until you can replace everything that isn't carpet with the same flooring. At least on the first level

The foyer was already refinished in 2019 with a custom stain and there is now way we can live through all of that sanding and mess again.

Then carpet again is your answer, not the best but anything else other than matching the hardwood will not be a good look.

The hardwood in the foyer is gorgeous--I'd bite the bullet and continue it in the other rooms. Your house looks lovely, and matching that hardwood in the dining room and study will not only look great, but will be a plus if you ever want to sell the house.

If you can't do that, then install wall to wall seagrass or jute, or a low-pile Wilton weave. LVP looks good in a basement, not in a dining room abutting a foyer with hardwood. Engineered wood can be a good choice, but not next to hardwood.

It sounds like carpet is your answer. However, i wanted to point out, that the dining room and office would be able to be closed off more easily than a 2-story front hall (so dust should be minimal in other rooms). If you have the custom stain, this is achievable, without redoing the front hall.

That is a good point about closing those two rooms off, but all I have of the stain is a little jar and the floor refinished passed away last year so I have no idea what the make up of the stain is. Do you think another floor refinished would be able to match the stain?

You will have some say they can't do it. Some say they can. So, I would start calling some, see what they say about price and if they can do it.

Once you have more information, you can make a better decision.

Something to keep in mind as you decorate after staining with that dark. You have a lot of dark furniture, so keep the walls and new rugs on the lighter side.

True. Price and seeing if and when they can do it are all factors. Yes, I agree on a light rug. If I choose carpet, I am researching a low-pile Wilton weave. I never heard of it.
