I think the bed needs to have a lighter design and not just a lighter color.

Fabric is not out of the option for sure. I am wanting to keep the dresser as is so or my question kind of goes towards would it be acceptable to have two different tones of furniture in a room

One dresser, one headboard and one mattress with or without a comforter --will there not be other items in the room to consider? More furniture? Wood trim? Doors? Window coverings? What is the black thing your laundry is piled on?
