Hydrangeas. The flowers vary in color depending on the strain, the soil and the environment.

Not an easy plant to take care of if you do not like to trim by hand.

Some kind of rise? Need a close up.

I was thinking those were either hydrangea or rose in the photo .. Is there a type of rose bush that would produce such a full bush of flowers?? Between Roses and Hydrangeas which are easier to take care of? Id like to have a plant that flowers all summer ...

we just moved into this 203 year old colonial style home .. (FYI we will be putting shutters back up after we paint the house) I discussed curb appeal on a thread here before. We decided on boxwood and roses or hydrangeas for the front ... I have no sense of style when it comes to landscaping .. I can see a row of boxwood across the front ... then were would I put the roses or hydrangeas? bushes or trees? I guess we will remove that tree there between the two windows .. though it makes me sad, I'm a tree hugger :)

Rhododendrons, azaleas.

Darling house! I would first add a row of hydrangeas along front of house on each side then in front of those add row of boxwoods. I have found hydrangeas to give a lot of bang for the buck! They bloom from June to August and come in blue,pink and shades of white. If you don't want to do boxwood I would suggest hostas!
All three are easy to care for and will add instant curb appeal.

I love the idea of hydrangeas or rose bushes behind boxwood all along the front of my house ... but now Im wondering what do the hydrangea or rose bushes look like throughout the winter??? I imagine large dead branchy bushes ... I live in Canada and the winter lasts longer then then summer, I just want to make sure the front of the house looks good during the cold months as well .. will the hydrangea or rose bushes be an eye sore throughout the winter months? The largest size boxwood available to me here are 5 gallon / 2' diameter round shrubs or 3' tall cones ... they wont cover much of the dead bushes in the winter ... ??

Hydrangeas will probably work better as they tend to keep most of their leaves through the winter. Roses definitely drop their leaves in winter.

In Illinois we also have cold & long winters. We always cut back our hydrangeas to about a foot tall which serves us well. In May they grow every year to full sized bushes again. The boxwood will give you dark green color year round.

oh my gosh those carpet roses are gorgeous! We used to live in a townhouse and had no room for flowers .. I am just so excited to plant anything at this point!! Thats great that you can cut the hydrangeas back to a foot tall .. that would not be much of an eye sore at all .. most likely would be hidden under all the snow we get here .. :)

A row of Pinkywinkie hydrangea would be nice for your home.

Hydrangeas are beautiful all summer long and come in many varieties and colors. They are very low maintenance and only require a little clean-up spring trimming. Any type of roses, while beautiful, have thorns making any trimming difficult, and many varieties are very finicky requiring lots of maintenance, bug treating, and winter prep work. Azaleas and rhododendrons can also be finicky liking only certain protected locations, and bloom only in spring. I am an avid gardener so have experience with all of the above which is the reason why I have removed all the finicky plants and replaced them with hydrangeas with beautiful results!
