Here you go.

In ordering, it is the hinge side from the outside. So. if the hinges are on the left, it is called out as "a left-hand window".

If that is confusing, Just tell your architect/salesperson how you want it to open from the inside as that is how the homeowner views it. Trust me (and most of the pros here on the site will agree), it is a very common mistake and very easily avoided if time is taken to ask the right questions.

Millworkman's attachment is very helpful so use that as a visual guide to further clarify.

Yes it is confusing. I'm a contractor and with a door you put your back to hinge side and it would be a left out or left in ect ... It should be the same with windows.

Thanks for your responses

That is one of the reasons why the "butt to the butt" method is not the best in my opinion and I never used it in my 20 years in the lumber and millwork business. There is always and exception.

Think of out swing casement windows as left hinge or right hinge from the exterior instead of hand.

Been using my method for over 40 years and this is the first time I ever had a issue unless they sent the wrong door or window.

Thanks for the input
