advice on hardware

We have had to remodel our whole home, due to hurricane Ian. Soup to nuts. We will be renting it when it’s completed maybe possibly selling in the future. My question is what finish hardware should we pick because we can do anything at this point. I’m inclined to Brush nickel because I’ve always thought it’s timeless. But maybe black for a change? Do you think black is just a passing trend? Thanks.

It's almost impossible to have an opinion without seeing photos of your home.

BTW, black hardware isn't a passing trend, it's been used for a couple hundred years in America.

The house is to the studs, so I don’t think pictures will help. We are starting from scratch. Basicly a new build. I’m just wondering if black has had its moment. It may have been used for a couple hundred years but not in the mainstream as it has been for the last couple years.

Personally, I find black too stark. I agree with you that it has had its moment. If you want to please the masses, I’d go with brushed nickel or chrome. Hope your rebuild goes well .

People are using black and brushed nickel now, and mixing and matching within the same house. Can you show us which style of door you're using, and maybe an inspiration picture or more that is guiding your design direction? I assume you're considering door hardware, and faucets, etc. Have you chosen materials for the bath and kitchen? If so, tell us about them. Whether something is a trend or not can be a matter of opinion, but if your choice works well with the other elements in the house it will hold up better no matter what.

    Agree with Yankeeeee.

Tried it--bought one sample pull to use on cloud white painted cabinet doors. Stood back, looked and within 3 seconds went, 'Nah'. Ended up using brushed stainless steel.

I will be using mostly white shaker style cabinets throughout and in the kitchen, the island gray cabinet bottoms, white tops. White countertops throughout with slight gray veining

I think this is too soon to worry about it. Hardware can be added at the very end of renovstion so slow down and wait until you are much further along. I will say do not do 2 different colored cabinets and 2 different counters it is too many things pick one and IMO no gray isalnd just all white cabinets and the island counter can then be something a bit of a star. I think if renting out is the ain keep everything simple and neutral . I do not like black hardware on white cabinets .

The gc is asking. We pick out hardware in the very near future for plumbing issues 🤷‍♀️

By hardware do you mean plumbing fittings like faucets? You can get those in stainless steel and do the cabinet and door hardware later. I have SS faucets and cooking appliances but used dark hardware on the cabinets and light fixtures. I like the contrast between the white cabinets and the dark hardware. But that’s a personal preference.

My architect recommended polished chrome on our recent project. She said all polished chrome looks the same and will match, where as nickels, brasses, blacks can have different tones depending on the manufacturer. We went with polished chrome and I have no regrets. Depending on how .you style it, polished chrome can look modern, traditional, transitional, whatever.
