Reaching end-of-life in what way?

Speed Queen TC5 is popular but all cycles have a choice of only two fill levels, which are approx 1/2 to 2/3 full (varies per the cycle) and 3 to 4.5 gals more with Deep Fill selected (also varies per the cycle).

Maytag MVWP586GW is a reasonable alternate with more water level choices. There's also MVWP585 but it has a shorter warranty period.

@dadoes A few months ago, I had the F&P motor replaced because, after the spin cycle, the clothes were still quite wet. I was noticing water on the underside of the lid & small amount of water dripping from the lid handle down the front of the machine. The repairman also tightened the drum. It had been behaving nicely for a few months, but today, another family member was doing wash & heard beeping. I thought the washer was just unbalanced, but it seems stuck in the rinse cycle, will not drain, and there was also a weird, rubbery (maybe?) smell. The repairman comes out tomorrow. I know there’s a way to do a diagnostic on it, but don’t know how. Thoughts?

Highly unusual that a SmartDrive motor fails. The rotor position sensor would be more likely but it should be a separate part from the motor (rotor and stator) as a whole.

Water leaking as you describe can be caused by a bad or obstructed diverter valve that doesn't fully shift to drain mode, which can allow some of the pumped water to pass to the recirculation hose, which aims across the rim of the spin basket ... the small bit of water there will hit the rim of the basket whirling at 1,000 RPM and splatter around inside.

The diverter valve and the pump are possible factors in your non-drain situation.

You didn't cite the model number, the above mostly assumes it's a non-HE agitator model, not an HE impeller (AquaSmart) model.

Are you seeking a top-load agitator washer or top-load impeller (HE) washer? What's the reason for not considering a front-load model?

@wdccruise I currently have an agitator, but would consider a top loader impeller—I am resistant to a front loader because friends of mine complain about things like having issues with the rubber gaskets getting moldy and smelling as well as leaking issues. I have also heard LG offers the best front loader, but their customer service is horrible.

Oh, too bad. The top CR-recommended washers were LG.

@dadoes do you know of a ”dupe” for the Fisher & Paykel model I have? I know Haier now owns F&P & GE too, I believe.

There is nothing any longer available with the features and functionality of F&P agitator toploaders.

@dadoes I have a troubleshooting question for you regarding my F&P GWL11. Had a tech out. He replaced pump. After an initial empty load of bleach & hot water, I ran a regular wash. The load went through the cycle but was wetter than it should be. i tried running another spin, but at that point the load was still wetter than normal & I noticed some suds & some gritty (sandy?) material at the bottom of the drum. Any ideas? Could replacing the draining hoses help? What about cleaning the maching with a vinegar/baking soda mix? I appreciate your input!

You ran the machine empty of clothes, with bleach and hot water ... on what fill level and which cycle?

The recommended tub-clean method (which is detailed in the User Guide) is the Permanent Press cycle via a special programming procedure, which allows a full hot fill. None of the other cycles do a full hot-fill (only the Eco Active pretreatment is at hot or warm, rest of the fill to the target level is cold). Permanent Press doesn't run Eco Active, the entire fill is at the selected temperature but is normally limited to a maximum of warm.

- Press/hold Favorite until it beeps.

- Select Perm Press.

- Select Hot temperature.

- I also suggest adding the Soak option.

- Press Favorite to save the programming.

You can then run a tub clean cycle whenever you wish by selecting Favorite and Start. (Only one Favorite can be programmed at a time, so this programming will replace anything you may already have on it. Redo the programming again if you wish after running the tub clean.)
