Painted wonderboard around fireplace

We bought ledgerstone to go around our fireplace floor to ceiling. The fireplace has wonderboard on the lower half and sheetrock above. We painted the sheetrock and wonderboard to lessen seeing through the gaps in ledgerstone (that's what happened in our basement and I hate it)... but now I love this clean look of painted wall. Can you texture and paint around the fireplace?
