Help with house update

I desperately need some update ideas for this old 80's built house. I am about to replace the roof and was thinking of going with black/granite. Before I decide though, I would really like to have some ideas for the exterior. I feel the porch columns need to be thicker and gutters will be replaced but after looking at all the ideas on houzz and pinterest, I realize I need to plan and prioritize the projects to make my house look more appealing and inviting! My budget is tight as I would like to have enough left over to plan a nice backyard escape. The front of my house is facing west so very hot from noon on. I could use some sort of shade options to really enjoy the front. I really appreciate any advice I can get!

Where is the door? I would remove the hedge first to all the railing to be seen. Replace it with low-growing things.

The door is on the right - it is dark with a glass insert - you can see the glare of the glass. Some Paint to make it stand out?

A medium gray roof color would look good with your brick and wouldn't be as severe looking as black. The darker the roof the more heat it will absorb. It sounds like your short-term priorities are the roof replacement and maybe some landscaping. If you want shade in the front you need to plant a tree or two as soon as possible as it takes a long time for a tree to grow big enough to make a difference as far as shade. If there is a garden center near you, pay for a landscape design that you can implement over time to spread out the cost. It's an investment, but it will pay off for your enjoyment and will enhance the value of your home.

a Tan/Brown architectural shingle is more subtle than a Black, and would soften the look.

it would compliment most colors for a future repainting or residing.

Are you not repainting? an all over color would make it look more refined. is the botttom cinder block? Lighten the door so it shows the entrance to the home.

I agree that you should remove all of the hedging and leave the angled sidewalk to the door open to improve the visibility of the the entrance. I agree that the paint on the first and second floor should match. And, yes, I would replace the columns with fewer, more substantial ones and place the one further toward the outside so the door is centered. A lighter colored door will be great.

I love the sharp contrast of a dark gray or black roof on a red brick house. I like the wood-look brown on this inspiration photo on the garage door, but more of a mahogany color would blend better with your brick color.

What everyone has said, but I'd use $$ to get a new door. Those builder doors don't go with your house.

Yes, I want to paint as soon as the roof is done. I like the idea of one color. Bottom of house is concrete block with engineered stone and textured stucco. Was thinking of using medium/dark grey for the house color with white trim, hence the darker shingles for the roof. Thanks everyone for all your help!

Taupe or gray would work good with red brick.

The lampost could use a little attention. Remove the hedge as pointed out and extend the planting from the post to along the porch using benderboard in gentle curves.

You have a covered porch for shade...get outdoor upholstered sofa, area rug and a coffee table.

Paint the front door a brighter color when you can, and place coordinating flower pots.

That will tide you over for quite some time, let things grow, so you can concentrate on your main projects. Oh yes, your tree.

Oh wow, thanks. Still thinking...the left wall of the house facing North could use a couple of taller shrubs and flowers. Make a stepping stone path from the porch around them to the rear.

Me? I would just put nice shutters and window flower boxes on the 2d floor., and paint (not sure what color's I'd pick.)

I think I would pick natural wood for the shutters and then decide what's best if after house was painted.

Black roofs are HOT. I don't mean sexy. I mean climate change heat dome hot.

Ordinarily I don't like trimmed hedges like yours but I would leave them. Give them some fertilzier and love. Put a nice bed of plantings down front near the street end of the driveway and add a 2d lampost with your address on it.

Last time I was house hunting I looked at so many house like yours I have kind of a nostalgic feeling for them. Wait a little bit, don't alter the look, and people will start calling it "classic" .

Changed my mind about unpainted wood. These are the shutters and window box look I'd go for.
