A few more first blooms on Saturday

I have a few first blooms today while a few daylilies have finished. It seems too soon.

Fancy Buttons had first bloom today. This one is on schedule low on buds.

Fortress of Solitude is new to the garden.

My Jan Zoo look a like, a goldner seedling just started. a good plant in a short time here.

Forest God is getting started. Another one with low bud count this season.

Sea Dragon finslly had a perfect bloom today. The first week of blooms were bad. It has alot of buds to go, hoping they are all better.

Magic Dancer with first bloom today. I thought this one was destroyed in 2019 when we enlarged a patio. I found a lump of roots the following spring and replanted it. Three seasons and blooms again!

I see that Sea Dragon is a Polston. I often wonder about his breeding line, as people's pictures don't measure up to the catalog (not that that is so unusual in the daylily world). Was it overcast the day of your pictures?

Yes, the blooms were in the shade. The bed gets shade from 11am til around 1 pm. Although, This is the color I see all day. I do think the weather plays a part in the color occasionally.

Fancy Buttons may be low on buds but not on charm. I like the color and if its consistently double it is an even nicer one.............I always like your Forest god and Sea Dragon looks great too...................Maryl

Lovely blooms Sherry. Are you finding with those daylilies with a couple of first bad blooms seem to do better on subsequent openings? Here daylily blooms will continue to grow less and less. One reason I decided to plant more of other perennials.

I like Fancy Buttons too with the white midrib. It must be nice to have some shade midday. Some people grow their plants out in the fields like rows of corn. Good growth, but not a pleasant atmosphere on a hot sunny day. I am happy to have a garden where many plants get some shade. Much more enjoyable looking at them on a hot day (when one can retreat into the shade a few steps away). On the other hand, we all know how tree shade can increase and limit our areas.

Sea Dragon is strutting it's stuff now! I like your Goldner seedling and Magic Dancer. It does seem too soon for some of your daylilies to have finished.

Maryl, Fancy Buttons doubles always, it is a smaller plant.

Julia, the experience this season on most daylilies is the first blooms are not nice. The exception this season was the yellows, every bloom was good.

This season it seems that my daylilies with some shade during the day had nicer first blooms. Also, these plants had nicer foliage…I am sure the drought played a part in that.

I really like Fortress of Solitude and Goldner seedling. Looks like it has a lot of buds. There's some magic in Magic Dancer, glad it survived. Aha that's how I remember my Sea Dragon used to look, so nice. I probably should drastically divide it, it has gotten huge.

Sea Dragon is lovely in your photo. I like the Goldner seedling too. I like Forest God. Mine had few buds this year but blooms were really pretty.
