Dining table for dark dated kitchen

last modified: 3 years ago

What style table and chairs would help brighten this kitchen? Changing cabinets and granite is not a possibility right now. it is not as yellow/gold as the pictures present. i would love to add a new Samsung Morning Blue refrigerator. Does that work?

This is the refrigerator . …

I’d skip that fridge, as the color will be too random (unless you are changing the backsplash) and I feel in general doesn’t suit.

Size and shape wise, can’t see that area well enough to suggest a table. Would seating for 6 be a bonus or an extension table? Whatever you decide on, if in budget look to add complementary island stools. Light chairs should do the trick in regards to lightening and large art and centrepiece will help as well in creating an attractive ”dining area”.

    Thank you, all great options.

If you can not change the kitchen, adding a refrigerator that is a different color will not update it. The frig is a coastal or Scandinavian color. Not what you have. Sorry about that.

The table and chairs look good with the style of the kitchen. You could cover the table with a table cloth. Those chairs could be slip-covered in an interesting print.

Start looking for some light fixtures that are more transitional...something that you really like. It may help you to live with what you have until you can change everything.

Do you need to replace the table? Is it damaged somehow that we can't see? The table looks fine - I would get ivory canvas covers for the chairs you have, or buy new chairs with ivory upholstery. Not a really yellow ivory, but not a white-white as that wouldn't look right with everything else. As the other commenters have said, that frig would stand out - not in a good way. Hold off on that purchase until you are remodeling the whole kitchen.

There are some folks here who always suggest changing the bulbs to a different color. I don't want to be one of them. But really, if your undercounter lighting is like it looks in the photos, change it!

I like the table and chairs and would consider updating by adding hardware to the cabinets, a colorful rug on the floor, and change the shades on the pendant lights.

It looks like a pretty good kitchen. It's not currently trendy but it's not terribly dated.

I totally understand the lighting issue and I’m surprised they show up so yellow. i actually have cool white bulbs in the under cabinet light fixtures. is that not what I need?

There is nothing wrong with the table I thought it was too much wood and that color of the table didn’t help lighten up the area. i want to make the room cheerier and don’t know how to accessorize to accomplish that. :-(

How about just being more cheery. (Inspiration taken from the art on the wall)

Splash out on barstools (I would get 3 of them)

I think it would be great to find the right arc floor lamp for the dining table, but it would be tricky. They can easily be in the way. Otherwise I would call in an electrician and hang a pendant./chandelier

Change out the large splotch of black on the floor to something lighter and brighter. Are the walls really gray like I'm seeing?

Are those cushions on the chairs? If so you could get new ones that have the colours from your pictures right by the table - yellow, orange and ? or get colourful barstools at the island or heck, do both. And I agree about painting the walls something lighter - get rid of the grey.

Unless you hate the chairs, you can get slipcovers for them and it will immediately lighten up how they look. Or just change the cushions.

I would spring for new barstools. Bringing in color there will help.

If you ever change the countertop, follow housegal’s advice.

Sofaguards.com has some cute patterns for your chairs. Etsy.com has a few stores that do slipcovers too.

Here is where you can bring in the blue you love. The refrigerator doesn’t go with your kitchen.

I’m very appreciative of everyone’s suggestions and will definitely execute some of them. i think the colors in the pictures may not have translated very well but still love all the ideas!

You can sometimes paint cabinets, it depends on what material they are made out of and if you are into DIY or have someone who can do it for you. Even if you don't paint the cabinets white or cream, it might be nice to add some hardware to the cabinets. It might make the kitchen seem a little more welcoming. Also looking at changing the under cabinet lighting to less yellow and LEDs might help some. Below are some images of kitchens and dining rooms we have done. Perhaps you will get some inspiration from them.
