I agree with GardenGal. I would get it into a much larger pot, and shade that pot. Grouping other plants in pots around the pot is one easy method.

Feeding regularly will bring a flush of new growth. I bet the new growth will be healthy.

once damaged.. many things can happen to the leaves...

if you treat the leaves for the secondary problem.. you will not solve the primary issue...

tip it out of the interior pot.. and look at the roots.. snap a pic.. i suspect you will find that it is pot bound... shove it back in the pot.. while we develop some nefarious plot..

it is a perennial.. you might add that forum next time..

hide this pot behind some of your other pots.. so the pot itself stays out of direct sun/heat...

No, it is not. At most, the leaf damage may be associated with excess sun or heat but in reality it is the roots being overheated. This causes the entire vine stress. A water issue would affect lower leaves first, then work its way up the vine.

btw, the Clematis or Vines forums would make the most sense for an appropriate posting venue much more so than Perennials. Any plant that lives longer than 2 growing seasons is a perennial regardless of its actual classification (tree, shrub, conifer, etc.). Most vines, including clematis, have much different growth habits to what are typically considered to be herbaceous perennials.

Thanks all. As an update the clematis came the following year. Seems it’s doing well. Only one flower but better looking then when I first got it.
