Love your choices. Are you sure that's hickory? Looks like walnut. Doesn't matter, it's lovely but they are very different woods. Have you seen a sample in person?

What isn't mass produced? I think your concern for lighting is safety. Seems you're are in Canada so not sure if Underwriters Laboratories is the standard for lighting in Canada, but having a fixture that meets their standards should assure you. Are you working with a lighting store or all online? If you can, find a lighting store that carries the pendants (not a big box store) and get their thoughts on it. I have found that independent lighting stores will meet any online price for the same item.

There are a number of pros here who can advise on the number of pendants. One of my favs is @BeverlyFLADeziner. Hope she jumps in.

I’d go with two larger lights. If interested (with your backsplash and counters being busy), I could see a softer finish, which will complement the cabinetry. Just a thought. Also consider the lighting effect, which is really important.

All such great help! We have decided to drop down to using two of the 13.7". The electrician wired for three today... oh well...we were going to go with three small but with the advice here, I will confidently tell them we need it rewired for two small!

@Maureen I appreciated the blog with calculations and the Crate and Barrel suggestions. I'm actually in NY State. What is the name of that orangey/wood toned dome from C&B that you pictured above? I can't find it on the website with a general search.

@tozmo1 Great suggestion to buy the lamps locally--I'm guessing because there are so many online outfits selling them that I should be able to get them here!

PS The countertop along the wall with appliances and the pantry will have a white DEKTON called Zenith. We are only using the Formica solid surface Sea Glass for the island.

Hello again, I found this lamp online at Pottery Barn and it has a nice bit of wood, white vs. bright orange bell, and it has the outline like our tile: Pottery Barn Margot Metal Pendant

How might this look with two of them over the island? It measures 11.5".

Hard to tell how that light is going to look IRL. Not to beat a dead horse, but in a local lighting store, the staff usually have decades of experience and can look at your plans, pull out a book of lighting you never knew existed and Wow! It will be perfect.

Oh the resources you all are giving me! Our island is 79.75" or 6.5 feet. These two different pendants are 11.5" and 13.7" so we are in the ballpark for a 6-8ft long island! Yay! What outdoor sconce might you suggest?

On the outside we are trying to find an outdoor light that is fitting. This is what our door will look like, three rectangular panes, but no side light but in a different color, see the orange below.

This is the front of our house before the work began. We will replace the door with a three paned door (clear glass) above with no side light.

This is the color of the door we will have on other side of the house -- the door in Copper Canyon Benjamin Moore.

Would love your suggestions! We like copper but are open to other ideas!

@Rebecca Holt I really like the copper color too. Are you settled on the door style? The reason I ask is because the corner of the house showing the door and small people is saying Craftsman but the door is saying mid century/modern. Love the door, I have the exact one, but just wondering if it fits the style of the house overall.

Given your kitchen’s MCM design, looks like you are heading that way with the door. If it were me (and haven’t already purchased the door), I’d try to better complement your home’s exterior style. Can’t recommend a light, as the allowable space and door’s hardware have to come into play and suggest getting the door installed before choosing.

Here is a traditional door (don’t know if you want full glass), but with a great color and modern accessories it might be a good compromise.

You don't have room on the island for 3 pendants.

The whole pendants over the island are a bit overused IMO. Even a linear light fixture is more exciting visually.

Re: Entry door and outdoor sconce--The door is purchased.... I get why you both tozmo1 and maureen picked a door with lights in the top portion and not below. Or all glass like we have in our other door as pictured above. We did kind of go mid century for the door when the rest of the house is a Dutch Colonial.... oops. We wanted a lot of light as in the door for the other side of the house but without a screen door we wanted a bit more privacy.

This is the outdoor light I found yesterday that I am leaning toward.

It is more bronze than copper but I like that it echoes the rectangles. What do you think?

PS 8-11-23: Very disappointed when they arrived that the wood is a wood accent on a metal plated top. So back to the drawing board on pendants....

What is the plan for the support of the overhang? A welded steel braced subtop, with open spacing? Solid surface has limited strength, and a lot of flexibility, and requires more support than stone. Very specific support. You cannot have a solid subtop.
