New Cabinets Acceptable

last modified: 3 years ago

Hello,

Recently got new ’high-end’ maple cabinets from Ultracraft, through a designer, and many of them are imperfect. The designer ordered them and had their contractor install.

Multiple were sent with uneven slanted edges (first pic of bottom cabinet) on some sides but not the other,

or off by size by just a little bit that creates a non-uniform look (bottom picture) on one side but aligns on the other. All cabinets have been ’adjusted’ by installer.

Wondering if anyone has any feedback on if these are issues that deserve to be addressed or not?

We have not had a very easy time getting this project done due to all the errors and quality of cabinets sent.

They have a chamfered edge profile. Perfectly normal. Leads to less chipping after getting knocked around. Your doors and drawers are adjusted for fit at the end of the project.

Are you sure the cabinets are not square, or is the the way the doors are hung? Most hinges have screws for small adjustments. Similarly, drawers have adjustments as well, under the drawer box or on the slides. If you have not paid the installers yet, they should fix it. If it's been a while and the intallers will not help, you can find plenty of on-line videos so you could DIY.

If you would help me clarify. Are you saying the radius on the edge in red doesn't match the radius on the edge in green?

If that is the case, then that would be a problem for me.

As for the other problem, I suspect your drawer glides just need to be adjusted some.

@DeWayne some edges are that way, some are not, on the same cabinet panel.

Unfortunately it was not intentional and looks uneven.

@bry911 correct. Edges dont match/line up because of the factory messing up on cutting the edges of the wood

What manufacturer? What factory? Who reordered? Is this RTA? Semi custom? Custom?

Different custom door styles have different edge profile options. Some have endless edge profile options. If your choice was one of the options, and it did not get indicated at reorder, then it defaults to the default profile. That is an ordering error, rather than a production error. Neither is going to be easy to correct without someone on the design side being an advocate with the manufacturer.

If it is a low options stock RTA line, it will not really be possible to correct, since you get what you get with those, and the factory is 8000 miles away. They do not sell or make doors or drawer fronts separately from making a whole cabinet. If you have an issue, it requires ordering an all new cabinet. IF the seller will even support doing that. It's out of their pocket, because the manufacturer will not reimburse.

@DeWayne - The OP answered all of your questions in the first sentence of the post... "Recently got new ’high-end’ maple cabinets from Ultracraft, through a designer, and many of them are imperfect.'

So, they were Ultracraft cabinets and the OP used a designer.

@nskeca - This appears to be a manufacturing defect. Contact Ultracraft or your designer to let them know that you have different edge profiles on the same cabinets. I suspect they will correct the issue in a reasonable manner.

@DeWayne Ultracraft, in North Carolina. Many doors have already been replaced due to warping, damage, etc

Many are curved then not, some curved more then others. Does not appear uniform or intentional, but rather a cutting issue at the factory.

Recently got new ’high-end’ maple cabinets from Ultracraft, through a designer, and many of them are imperfect. The designer ordered them and had their contractor install.

The 'edge profiles' are mismatched. All should be the same. Insist on it. This is the cabinet orderer/ designer's problem. Either the designer messed up on a reorder or the factory messed up.

Totally the factory screw up if you have different profiles on the same panel. The exception to this would be in the case of butt doors. Square edge where the doors meet and profiled on outside edge of the two door unit.

The installer should have noticed this and refused to install.

The uneven gap along the drawers could be one of two things or a combination. If a drawer stack has drawer fronts with different outside edge profiles, that would explain the uneven gap. (This looks to be the case with your install.)

OR, the drawer front install needs to be tweaked
