There's a gear-grinding noise. The transmission may be internally broken. There may be a coupler broken under the agitator that attaches it to the transmission drive shaft or the splines on the shaft may be rusted and slipping. There may be a component that shifts the mechanism between agitate and spin that isn't fully engaging. The model number is not cited for searching parts diagrams regards to the mechanical design.

Thanks for the reply. I managed to get the agitator assembly off. It looks like it is ground out from the top looking down.

When looking at it from underneath it seems like the grooves are still all intact.

Seems the agitator dogs (I think thats the name) are all working fine because I can spin the top part in 1 direction, but it stops spinning when I try the other way.

I am not sure if I need to replace this entire assembly to fix my washer? I tried pulling the 2 parts apart but I can not. Here is a image of the model number of my laundry combo.

I had a Kenmore agitator model that I repaired and kept running for about 20 years. I am willng to bet that it is the clutch that is at fault. I seem to remember replacing something in that clutch assembly as I had the very same thing happen.

That old machine was so much better than is the new one that I bought.

Your machine was manufactured by Frigidaire for Sears/Kenmore. The first three digits (before the period) on Kenmore appliance model numbers is a code for the source manufacturer. 417 is Frigidaire.

The agitator is a one-piece assembly, the Part Number for it is 131605901. The auger is not available as a separate piece and probably doesn't detach (unless you break it off).

Your 1st photo, top of the agitator, is related only to the auger which apparently is OK per your description "can spin the top part in 1 direction, but it stops spinning when I try the other way."

The agitator is driven at the base, your 2nd photo. It attaches to a drive hub. The hub mounts to the transmission shaft. The hub is item 2 below, Part Number 131475100.

Run the machine with the agitator removed to visually confirm that the drive hub oscillates during agitation. I expect it doesn't. Which means either the drive hub is loose on the shaft (probably not), or more likely the transmission is gone bad (internal gears). Transmission is part number 131878402.

The belt presumably is OK, else the machine wouldn't spin and you say it does spin just not agitate. The pump is a separate electric motor component, not related to the transmission or main drive motor or belt.
