Rug pad -felt with rubber grid

I have a new hardwood floor that needs some rugs. and pads. i am thinking of going the route of felt with rubber backing. i am sensitive to smells, will the rubber be over powering?

    We have bought many oriental rugs over the years and many of the dealers didn't like the rubber backed felt padding, saying it wasn't good for the floors or rugs. They usually recommend the thicker felt padding.
