Smells right after washing? Or after some dirty dishes put in for the next load? That’s the issue I have and I know others who have the same issue. Apparently the newer dishwashers are so air tight? We have a little piece of wood we stick in the top opening, to prop it open so it can vent.

I think we need more information. What and how much detergent are you using? What dishwasher cleaner did you use? When you say the dishes smell dirty, what do you mean? Fishy, wet dog, etc.? Do you pre-rinse?

Detergent enzymes can cause an odor in relation to other factors. Did your previous dishwasher have a stainless steel tub? There have been reports that placing a small piece of copper somewhere in the dishwasher, such as piece of copper tubing on one of the rack tines, eliminated the odor. Copper has antimicrobial properties.

Kind of a wet dog smell. Not fishy. Detergent is Comet brand as is the dry-aid fluid.

I do a rinse of all the dishes before placing in tub but don't do a pre-rinse cycle in the machine.

Comet dishwasher detergent? I've never seen or heard of that brand. Can you provide a photo of the package? Do you perhaps mean Cascade?

Are you using Cascade powder or pods? What cleaner did you use? Do you pre-rinse?

Also just to say, dishware should be scraped of hard food remnants (bones, pits, gristle, fibrous material) but not rinsed before loading. Enzymes need food soils on which to work. Lack of food soil results in detergent overdosing when pods are used, with which detergent dosage cannot be controlled/reduced accordingly to the soil level. Many dishwashers nowadays have sensors that reduce the number of water changes if minimal or no food soil is detected.
