Need help!! Stair Runners for Dummies.

Hi all, I’m looking for a primer on stair runners and how best to get them installed on hardwood floors.

I can find a lot of sites on “how to DIY a stair runner” but not a lot of advice on IF I should DIY a stair runner, or what kind of person to hire.

…

How do I find a runner long enough, and how do I get padding underneath it without it being visible from the sides? Will it damage my hardwood floors irreversibly, or is there a low-damage or damage free option? How much should I expect to pay, and is a company like “Empire Today” the best option?

I recently got burned by my flooring company and really don’t want that to happen again. Would love any advice or opinions you guys can give!

Wanted to add: I’ve looked at carpet companies but am having trouble finding a style I like there, and I wonder if I should buy one online and hire people to install it.

I have DIYd it back when I owned a couple tonhouse renatls. Easy to install with a stapler, the trick is to get it straight (first time we started straight but it ended up curved)

If your stair turns or has a landing I think even I would not DIY

In my area we have a 100 year old carpet store that I would purchase from and have install,

It should coordinate with the rugs and fabrics on the main floor. There is also the option of doing carpet treads if you need traction now and want to let the decorative ideas percolate for a bit.
