front entry trim board question — grooved or not?

For the header trim board that will run horizontally across the top of the entry doors, would someone be able to advise whether I need a grooved piece like the piece in the below photo (I’m using this kind of grooved board for the trim that runs vertically on the side of each door — the “legs” — because it fits nicely over the siding) or flat stock with no groove? In case relevant, the intended trim specs are: 5” side trim, and 5.5” header trim with 2-3/4” crown.
