Split AC/Heat sizing

We are relocating to SW Missouri. Different climate than in northern IL.

Our new home has a 3-car garage, 21x30x10, insulated with R-38 ceiling, insulated 2x4 walls plus insulated overhead doors. Faces south.

Seeking knowledge to heat and cool. Not expecting to maintain home comfort but wish the option for projects or to use for additional space. Thinking a split system is the right choice. How would I begin?

For a single space, a DIY minisplit would be ideal.

We have installed mini-split heat pumps in garages for two or three different clients. One had a three-car garage where the third bay was separated from the other two to a large extent and got it's own separate indoor unit; the other two bays were served by another indoor unit. Depending on your specific application and climate zone, you might get by with a single unit serving all three bays. Local HVAC contractors who have installed mini-splits in garages will be able to help with regard to sizing and selecting the right equipment.

A mini split would work well in an open garage. The smallest size is nominally 1.5 tons which should be adequate for your application.
