Next quilt.

I think we all try to plan our next quilt as we are finishing the current one.

I have two large bins of strings and strips that need to be taken care of. Someone out there suggested using flannel as the base for string blocks. Lord knows I have tons of flannel leftovers from my chemo quilts. So I haven’t tried one yet but it is in the thinking stage.

A question is, would the quilt need batting if it is then backed in flannel? That would be two layers of flannel plus the cotton top. OR instead of using regular batting, replace it with another layer of flannel. Then we have three flannel layers and one cotton. It would certainly be warm enough.

Or would it be just a bit unwieldy to get those layers to behave?

Are you beginning to see that I have a lot of flannel that needs taking care of as well?

I might just give it a go. Wish me luck!

I have a string quilt on my radar, as soon as I finish the the one on the machine and the one on the wall. I stumbled onto a great example that will be my inspiration. They call it a rainbow quilt. Someone suggested using dryer sheets for a base, so I'm saving my big dryer sheets (I have dogs, so I use the giant ones). They are about 9X12, so I'll trim them to 9".

I have never made a quilt with flannel, so I'm not sure I can suggest anything. When I was cleaning out my sewing room for the home sale, the flannel I found was used to make several pairs of pajama pants, lol.

Theresa, I don’t think I’ve ever worked with flannel as batting before, so I can’t be very helpful. I have to say that sewing strings onto flannel sounds strange, but since I haven’t tried it, I shouldn’t knock it. i suppose you can give it a try and see how it goes.

Theresa, I guess it depends on how heavy you want your quilt to be. The flannel will be heavier weight than batting.

Bkay, I tried using dryer sheets once for a string quilt. I found them to be a) VERY hard to see against my white sewing machine and b) VERY hard to work with because they are so flimsy.

Ive made several string quilts but always with old phone book pages. i would piece the back with large scraps of flannel in a very simple pattern.
