Suggestions on New Kitchen Island Lighting, Please
We need new kitchen island lighting. Style is generally a mix of warm industrial / happy modern. Several materials + colors in the space, including black, stainless steel, walnut, and white.
Issues with the current lighting are:
- Hangs down too low and/or wide near the counter. We have tall people and one of the glass shades has already been broken due to bumping.
- Dislike the exposed lightbulb look

We do use/need this as task lighting when working at the counter, not just ambient/decorative. I don't personally have a preference for pendant over chandelier-style, but due to the incidents that we've already had I am wondering:
- If we should go more chandelier-style that is also a bit higher, the bulk of which would be centered on the counter and less likely to get bumped.
- I'd also lean toward much less exposed breakable material.
Measurements:
- Island counter ~45"x84"
- Bottom of current shade terminates ~28" down from the ceiling, which is too low and we bump it.
- Distance between the 2 points in the ceiling where the electrical + cut outs are is ~38"

I think a Poulsen PH5 pendant might look great. It comes in many colors and while those produced by louispoulsen.com are expensive, there are many knockoffs available from other sources.
There are also ones with different styles, sizes, and shade quantities as shown here.

I assume you used a 12" down rod? This pendent is the same size as what you have now, but if you use a 6" rod the total height will be 23". It brings in the semi-industrial look and takes care of the exposed bulb issue. It also comes in a semi-flush, which is 12.5" high. Both are Apogee on Shades of Light. They each take 100 W, so you should be able to throw off enough light.
I think this Lundy flushmount from Urban Electric could look great too in either black or chrome. https://www.urbanelectric.com/lundy-flushmount.html This company is ridiculously expensive ($2k - $3K for this fixture depending on the finish.) But if you google, Lundy flushmount, many other options like it appear for much less. Each of these takes 2 - 60 w bulbs.

You want a distance of really no more than 39 inches BOTTOM of light to counter and if you need more? You go to semi flush or recessed.
For hanging pendants?
That dictates that the combined mount, stem/chain/fixture combined total can't exceed 21 inches or it will be a head bumper.
