Artwork and MCM

last modified: 2 years ago

I fell in love with this painting prior to moving into our current house. Current house is an authentic mid century modern house. For years I've not displayed the painting as I wasn't sure if went with the rest of the house. Any ideas how to make this painting feel more incorporated into a MCM style? It's in a guest room so I can see adopting a full travel theme.

The only thing that jumps out to me is the frame, which has an industrial feel you'll always be fighting -- a simple wood frame, maybe with a mat, would be easier to coordinate with.

But otherwise, it's a perfectly nice painting, and if you love it, you should be able to find a place that you can enjoy it. Art doesn't have to have a "theme" in any room, or to match the era of a house, but it's true that things that are visible simultaneously should't fight. So if it doesn't go with other art you have, it may need a smaller wall by itself in a hall or side entry or something. You can move it around until you find the right place, or find some colors and elements for the guest room that will make it feel at home.

Can you post a photo of the room?

Might help to see the rest of the room but I would just pick up on the emphasis on metals in the painting and frame and emphasize that in the room's MCM decor, along with oranges and browns.

These lamps from Lamps Plus could be fun

And then just stick with solid color bedding and upholstery and area rugs. If there is wall space for more art work, maybe mid-century black and white photos in bronze frames would be best. Get a full length mirror with metal frame.

    That's from Walmart for $5

I would get a different frame that is a simple wood with no carving. Artwork does not have to match the style of your house, but changing out the frame will take away some of the overtly ornate nature, which I presume is what is bothering you most.

A linen liner and contemporary frame will help the appearance of the painting and make it more modern overall.

I just Google Image Serched the painting and have found it on a number of sites. Is this one of the paintings sold by vendors on cruise ships? The cost of the linen liner and frame will not be inexpensive. Make sure this artwork is worth the investment.

Room is a bit of a mess due to renovation. The rug will not be part of this room. In its place, I plan to put a couple of arm chairs with a table (maybe an old suitcase with legs). Currently, I've had a grey quilt but am not opposed to switching out bedding. Headboard is custom and is a door from my first home. Could repaint a different color.

Are you showing all the wall space in the room? How much wall space is on the wall with the plant? I think the painting is rather too large for the space where you have it. The only way I would leave it on that wall is to remove the utility item and do the wall with mondern accent wallpaper that fits with the painting, and then hang the painting centered and slightly higher than the doorframe, with a taller cabinet or modified hutch desk underneath.

If there is no other availaible wallspace, and I wanted to be really gutsy, I would hang the painting directly on the window frame over the bed and figure out a different window covering solution -- probably neutral curtains like lined burlap. If I did that, I would definitely not reframe the painting. I would ditch the headboard.

Last possibility would be to center the painting under the middle post of the windows and then line up on each side of it 2 more framed works, smaller rectangles, possibly all photos of Paris, b&w, modern and old. I reframe the painting for that.

Now that I see how small the room is I wouldn't bring in bright MCM lamps, pillows, etc. I'd do blocks of solid color in the bedding in the same brown and gold colors as the painting, keep the gray rug, with maybe add some a red or blue as throw pillows, plain lighting and plain everything for the other furniture. I don't think you need a headboard if you 4 good pillows.

Actually, now that I look again at the windows is the room and the painting, it really would be fun to have them opposite each other. But something has to be done about that little white box..

Possibly the MCM wallpaper I suggested isn't just right, but I think some kind of graphic and geometric wallpaper on that wall where you've got the painting now would clinch the deal.

Yes, there's just very little wall space fory to the windows and closet. But gads of natural light!

We plan to either remove the box or just get it to where we can hang the painting over the box

So my jaw is on the floor that somebody is wrinking their nose at a painting sold on cruise ships. Does not anyone watch An Affair to Remember anymore? Not too mention I wouldn't advise ''ínvesting"' in art instead browsing the massive junk sold at Home Depot.

So anyway, here are some more wallpapers if you think it would work in the room.

    @beverly

What difference would it make if it came from a cruise ship? Is all of the art in your home museum curated? If it is then kudos to you. Go brag about it to your friends. I am sure they will be thrilled to hear all the details. We love that for you.

Even after you remove the box you'll need a bit of distance from the switch plate, and I don't think the top of the painting will look right if it is on the same line as the door frame. So that's why i'm suggesting wall paper, to kind of visually blur all that by making the whole wall part of the painting. Everything I'm suggesting is peel and stick

Love your wallpaper comments! These are great!!

This is the kind of desk I would look for to replace the one you have now -- something with more height

    that's from Target

if you want to break the bank, this is from Homary

So here's more options for the wallpaper

    French newspaper

Paris map (this is an entire wall mural, so you'd end up having to pick your favorite part and then use that part, cutting out for the doors too -- unless you wanted to paper the doors too!)

Here's a wall mural that's like your painting, so it could be quite the explosion

or something conservative and modern MCM to be like your windows

in the end, if you just want to remove the box or hide it behind the painting, make the light switchplate match the walls, and re-frame the work you can find websites that sell frames and mats inexpensively, and if you just measure correctly, they will send you the right-sized linen mat and frame, something to match your wood trim.

If you love the painting, it will work. Just change the frame.
