An albino butternut? Maybe that particular squash picked up a pigment gene from a ghost pumpkin? Can only guess.

In the photo, the color doesn't look very different to me.

Geez Louise. It's ANOTHER one! Not sure if this is from the same plant. OK, you can call it VERY LIGHT beige if you want. I've been growing these things for decades, and this is the first year I've seen whitish butternuts.

If you left it on the vine a bit longer would it have turned a little darker? Assuming the vine was still viable?

Agreed, the lighter one looks like it still had some time left to ripen on the vine. The stem still looks pretty green compared to the darker squash. It may darken up a bit if you can leave it in a warm sunny spot.

No, it's been established in a previous exchange that green streaks near the stem on a butternut are NOT an indication of unripeness. In my plants, you get those streaks on almost every squash and they NEVER go away, no matter how long you leave them on the vine. Same with the white color. In terms of edibility, they are perfectly ripe.

The pale BN looks alot like how the squash I picked too soon looked after I let ripen off the vine indoors. See butternut squash 'accidentally' picked too soon (houzz.com) . I'm thinking JoshuaHoyer is right, that it will darken in a warm sunny spot. But it needs to be a dry spot too.

Fair point. I should say that a few weeks after these were harvested, and sitting firmly in the shade, they are noticeably more tan. But when picked, the skin was fingernail hard. So they were just as ripe when picked as the others I've harvested. My squash go from green to tan as they ripen. Never before seen any go green to white to tan as I'm seeing here.
