very small height window seat

Hi, I have bay windows in my living room and dining room that I'm not sure how to use. The living room seems perfect for a window seat but the space between the seat and the windowsill is extremely short. And what to put in the dining room space?? Bad photo but hopefully gives some idea. There's less than 2" between the base and the window bottom...The dining room seat is exactly the same.

It doesn’t seem well suited for a seat. What is the sill height? Guests will be leaning against shutters? Is the glass tempered?

From my experience, window seats are more for looks than for function. I have three of them and no one sits on them--they're places to drop stuff! Maybe in a dining room or kitchen with a table, but even then you need to make sure that it's at the right height and depth.

Anyway, you definitely don't have enough room for cushions, especially with the shutters. Do you have more photos of how they relate to the whole room?

There's an area on the wall one could lean against but I agree not so comfortable with the sil to seat height. cushion would have to very thin. No one would ever sit there in the dining room. I guess I'm trying to figure out what might look nice. Here are broader images--not my furniture.

Neither of them are even near seat height. They are deep windowsills. I would keep them clear…

I say go for it. I agree that most of the time, window seats are for looks more than seating, but there is something so appealing about window seats! Unless you plan on opening your shutters by the hinges, I think a 2 inch cushion would look great, and I encourage you to do so. If you want to do a mockup, place some flat pillows along the entire length of the window. Another option is to replace the shutters with roman shades, and have your window seats.

Climbing up over a vent to sit uncomfortably? Does not sound appealing to me. I would use the space for beautifully potted live plants. Pretty room.

I think plant s or remove them for sure no seating on either . I think both are just deep window ledges and should be treated as such if no possibility of removing them.

I have 2 window seats with custom bench cushions 2 inches high, and otherwise backed with many pillows plus a Japanese gamer's seat for added support in the breakfast nook.

I removed the cushion from this so I could put my custom bench cushion over it. I covered the back with the same zip-cover I used for other cushions on the window seat.

Mine don't have shutters. The windows on each side of the bay are crank-openable. I sit in them every day because of the view and the sun, either eating at the breakfast nook or using my laptop and reading in my office, but if you don't want to remove the shutters on yours and use them, why should you?

I get so much sun in these windows I would definitely use them to grow plants if I weren't sitting in them. If I decided against plants there, I would use them as a bookshelf.

@mytwo cents what filling did you use for the base cushion?

I inherited them from the last owners and not sure I know. I could go downstairs look! I think they are a quality foam. They are as nice as sofa seating. I wanted a different cover on one and was in a rush, in a new neighborhood not knowing any upholsterers, so I thought ordering a new one from Etsy would be simplest and cheapest (the original cushion had piping etc). But the quality of the foam cushions was so poor in what I got back, I ended up recovering the original cushion anyway.

I'm looking more closely at your photos and I *think* I have 22 inches deep but possibly more. In the color photo I posted, when I use that bench, I stretch out sideways with my feet up on the bench and my back supported by the corner rather than sit against the central glass. For the b&w breakfast nook, I do sit centrally, facing a table, but there is the gamer chair support between me and the glass. I've made myself a comfy perch in the breakfast nook, but I wouldn't offer it to guests or impose it on other members of the family. as their only option for a seat. The HVAC vent is there, and while it's wonderful in winter, it's annoying in summer. Also, I fuss with the loose pillows getting in and out from behind the table but I don't expect other peope would much like maneuvering in and out like I do to avoid knocking pillows onto the floor.

If you are thinking maybe you would like the romance of window seating, one cheap way to find out would be to buy a typical outdoor back/seat cushion, where the seat cushion and back cushion joined as one. You can move it around the window seats and see if sitting has any real draw before you take away shutters or invest in quality bench cushions.

One more option you have if you don't want to remove the shuttters is to use one or 2 independent cushions in case anybody actually would enjoy perching there occasionally with a cup of coffee.

These cushions from Garden Glory are particularly flouncy and might be utterly against your style, but just to give you an idea of what could be set into one corner of the seat while the rest is left free, or maybe with a tray on it with a small plant that could be easily moved away if need be

But I think these are fun

They have loads of colors and one in a zebra print that I quite like! But they are expensive, and I would get a cheap pillow from Amazon to try out the idea first.

I would think it a problem if you keep the shutters to put anything heavy there if it continuously needs to be moved in order to open the shutters. Cushions like these can just be tossed around and probably there are other vendors who make different styles, less flamboyant. It just all depends on what the rest of your house is going to look like. It's also possible things in nice baskets might be easiest to deal with.

I would stage it as a window seat but probably wouldnt spend much time sitting there. Just a decorative nod to a window seat. I did that in my bedroom. Similar in that the window is only an inch above the wide sill. The cat loves it.

That is WAAAAAYYYYY too high to sit on comfortably. Just look at the difference in height between the chairs in that photo and the bottom of the windows! You would have to re-configure them to be able to sit there, and the heating element just adds a further complication.

Depending on your budget, just use the sill for plants or decorative items.
