Renovation prices vary widely depending on your location. For example, our family bathroom complete gut reno was $30k 5 years ago. It’s a 5x9 space, so not large. I’m in the Boston area. My in laws in NC had a quote for their primary bathroom that would have been $75k for full gut renovation 4 years ago.

If your tub and shower are not leaking and you want to not spend more than $1-2k, try changing just the shower head and tub fixtures instead. There are plenty of options that are modern. Remove the swag curtain. Swap out the accessories and towels. Hang some modern art (that can be in a wet environment).

If you replace the tub or shower, you may also have to replace the floor. It depends how the room was constructed. Check with your friends and neighbors to see what going rates are. Keep us posted to what you end up doing!

What is your budget range? Sarah above has good suggestions. Start by removing the art, towels, swag, rugs and all the decorative knickknacks (pretend you are going to paint). ^ good advice! i actually think the glass block, tub and shower are quite neutral but its the flooring, cabinetry and decor that are dating the space -

if it were me, I would pull out all of the decor, re paint the walls a fresh soft white bc a newly painted room feels fresh, paint the cabinetry black, and update the sink faucets - I would put back very little decor keeping the space clean/fresh without a lot of clutter (I would remove the curtain swag for sure)

new flooring that is less pink would be great but probably not worth the hassle/mess/expense -

consistent white bath mats and towels, calm down visual clutter so that is something to consider as well

IMO a step up tub is disaster waiting to happen wet floor bare feet not a good combo. I love to bathe we have friends who have the exact situation you have and I only ever had a bath once in that tub getting in and out was awful/Why not do the bathroom well not piecemeal . The shower to change will require a rip out anyway so why not get it all brought up to date. Do you actually use the tub ? It could the angle of the picture but that tub looks small to me .

Please, please go view some refinished cultured marble before making a decision! Investigated for my mom with similar situation and slickness/durability meant most companies discouraged from installing places where you step. Several refused, presumably for liability reasons.

Yes, I am well aware of this. We have a slip proof finish on our step and tub bottom so I will definitely not cover it over. Thank you.

The swag valance, art and accessories date the bathroom to the 90’s. Remove it all, stand back and reassess.
