Load bearing wall separating kitchen and dining rooms

Redoing kitchen and want to open load bearing wall to create a more open concept for an island with seating. Keeping a lip and column would be more cost effective and less labor intensive and potentially avoid additional problems from installing and imbedding an engineered beam. Wondering if a column so close to the front entry/ island will look odd? The other issue is flooring. Once you remove the wall, how do you transition flooring? Currently have tile in the kitchen (mud job) and wood flooring in the dining room. Would keeping the beam and column create a natural transition and would i need to redo all the flooring the same if we imbedded the beam? lots of questions, I know but everything seems to ”snowball.” Want my dream kitchen at a reasonable price and am willing to compromise.

What is the appeal of the island with seating? For less money, you could have a very nice galley kitchen, with a rolling cart and a couple stools. Then you eat in the dining room.

Get a beam in there. You might need a steel beam based on that span. Looks to be about 20 ft.

If you want to add 20k to an 80K project, plus get all the backlash thats already stsrted against open concept, then hire better pros.

Find an experienced framer who has a good working relationship with the local division of inspection. He'll know what's required, how long it will take, and how much it will cost at his first visit.

IMO you need a steel beam and as for the floor once you have opened that ,all this space becomes all one space so all the same flooring . If you want the beam embedded so it is invisible that will cost big $$$$ and sometimes not possible. That is why you need a good contractor and IMO a structural engineer to tell you what can be done and how. Your walkways in the kitchen are too small and remember if the beam stays visible that space really did not change if you could not have an island before visually you still can't have an island .You also need an independant kitchen designer since there are IMO some issue s with layout.

Appreciate the input … looks like I need to find a new house lol ! i have gone to 3 different kitchen designers who pretty much come up with the same thing… the current space with wall is 11’w20’l so you're right, an island can’t fit

thought opening the wall would do the trick but opens a can of worms…

I agree. A lot of money just to open to the dining room isn't 'open concept'. You'd need to add in the living room space too. Finding another house is a realistic call.
