Different wood tones- yea or nay

last year
last modified: last year

I recently worked with a local designer to furnish and style my foyer. The pieces have started arriving, and while the sideboard and bench looked to have similar finishes on the design board, in reality they’re very different (most evident in last photo- pardon the mess). Is this a no-go, or ok? Bench will have a cushion, it just hasn’t arrived yet. Thanks!

I would rearrange to put the chair facing the door, the tree into the angle and the small table wherever it makes sense after that. It would be easier to judge if the rolled up rug were not still there.

My concern about an upholstered chair like that is people entering on a rainy day dripping on it while they use it to take off their shoes. Generally I think a utlitarian chair makes most sense in an entry, because it is really just a momentary perch, not someplace someone plans to lounge in.

  • last year

a_hopler I think your post from yesterday is absolutely stunning. Love everything about it and I am going to follow your advice when we redo our foyer. Thank you for such great ideas!

  • last year

I will have a bench just inside the door by the rug for shoes and such. Replacing the Wade with this one.

  • last year

I think this chair could tie in really well, but it’s also short/small.

I think the tree and chair are too much.

I don’t think anybody is going to care about the vent. Places have vents. It’s a part of life. All the paraphernalia to hide the vent is worse than the vent, imo. The tree is covering the art. You could still leave the same art there, but without the big fake tree obscuring the art it will be visible. You already have a bench, so the chair is not needed there.

Here it is rearranged. Tree would be repotted if kept. Not at all attached to any of these pieces and would be open to a table with vase! Maybe a la this? 32”

  • last year

Also think this is kinda fun if i do a jute rug… maybe?

  • last year

I like the rearrangement. I was also going to mention that the tree covered the art. Whether you like it or not, the tree covering the picture just doesn’t look right. Either take the picture down for now and rehang after the tree is planted or keep the rearrangement as in your post above. I still like the idea of a round rug, but a square in the correct size will also work.

I like this colorful chair! Great idea with a jute rug!

@a_hopler did you ever get the straw baskets that are supposed to be in the "sideboard"? I think they would have made the two pieces blend together.

Was this designer a furniture-store designer whose services were free if you bought furniture?

This is the current state of affairs… still deciding what to do about chair/tree/table area- get a more colorful chair, just do a table and vase, replace tree with plant on side table, smaller side table, etc . Thinking of putting a couple hanging planters above the bench or moving the art from the other wall. Have a few alternate rugs (square) on order to try, both patterned and jute/sisal.

  • last year

I like the new layout by the front door. I would get a colorful cushion/blue and tan possibly. I like the idea of a jute rug also. I would remove everything by the screen and when you are out, you will find the perfect colorful chair. Check Target. I’m not into fake trees. A small black table with a blue luminara candle in a glass candle holder. Maybe a small plant too. Have fun!

  • last year

Why do I think a board with a couple of hooks and a straw hat over the seat would be sufficient art. To commonplace?

See if you like the Tafton floral club chair at Target.

  • last year

The staircase area has good “stand-ins, but you need a colorful chair there.

Not loving the little wood table. Maybe a fun metal one? I would leave that last item as a “when I find it, I’ll know it” shopping surprise.

    Food for thought:

Yeah i dont love that table in person either. luckily was cheap so no big loss to change. this chair might be a decent fit? too muted? i have fall on the brain!

Maybe cushions like these for your bench?

I think it will be hard to hang planters over the bench, hard to water plants and keep them from dripping on the bench, and taller people won't be able to use the bench.

I think this might be nice and useful and lend warmth, and create a nice reflection in the mirror. It's a carved Belgian hat/coat rack with a shelf on top

A trumk might look nice instead of a table next to your upholstered chair

Found a patterned chair i like!

is something like this right for above the bench (re: suggestion to add hooks and straw hat) or just black hooks, no wood?

  • last year

I vote for a rack with a shelf

  • last year

I actually like the Preston medallion chair.

  • last year

Found a chair that both my husband and I like, and i have a sisal rug ordered that will better fill the space. getting there! the chair is still a little shorter than i’d like, though. does it look best straight on from the door (i’d switch art to a couple staggered botanical prints or dimensional pieces possibly) or angled in front of the grate? Current table will be swapped for a darker metal.

  • last year

I like it better not against the grate. Looks like you are trying to hide it but not quite. Maybe you could position a throw over the back?
Put a big live plant on the table….. play with it until you are happy.

    a_hopler thanked Stacey
  • last year

Table looks nicer against the wall near the door rather than in front of the grate and the chair should then be placed in a logical relationship to the table. If some or all of the grate shows, it doesn't matter.

Just saw your thread. I think you have a good start. I suggest you pull chair over a bit and position table to it. Then add elements that lower the eye. I moved art lower to make it more a part of the vignette. I added a fern for sone green and a navy blue velvet lumbar pillow for the chair. Then a cute bamboo magazine rack. With more elements lower it helps direct the eye to cohesive arrangement. Can you see the difference these few adjustments make?

Cute chair! I like it on the solid wall with a slight tilt towards the steps. Table on the left side of the chair (right side of the photo) with an amber liquid in a beautiful glass…. ☺️

I would avoid putting upholstered furniture in front of a vent. Besides reducing your air flow, the dust from it can ruin the fabric.

    a_hopler thanked RedRyder
  • last year

@Red Ryder me thinks that may be a return sucking air in. ????

  • last year

Who knows? I can’t figure out my own vents but I have a big one near my front entrance too and I keep stuff away from it. If there’s a chance it blows anything out, it’ll be dirty and ruin her sweet chair.

  • last year

The arrangement Flo Mangan suggested looks great comfortable casual and welcoming.

  • last year

Definitely think we need a larger mirrorAnd on opposite wall nice piece of art to reflect in the mirror

  • last year

@Red Ryder I have one too. And it is near the front entry in the middle of the house. It is a return vent. I stupidly put a book case in front of it. I spite of it being a return vent, it accumulated more dust than the output vents. Maybe an experienced and knowledgeable person will say, "Duh!" So I will be at them to it! 😁

@a_hopler the chair you chose makes me want to sit there! Adorable! Great color with your wall.

The saga continues… after poring over swatches, i ordered a custom size sisal rug that perfectly tied in the carpet color with the beige in the mirror/lamp. However, the finished product has much less greige than the swatch did, so now it looks off. How can i salvage it, layering it with a rug that ties in the carpet color? I’m super limited with needing a custom size to properly fill the space (7x8’). *Clutter is temporary, im reorganizing the mudroom.*

  • last year

Sorry, not sure about the rug, but I like what you’ve done! I’d move the plant stand a bit away from the chair (in front of the outlet) and put a larger plant on it. You’re almost there!

That rug is too big, it should not touch the bottom of the stairs. it creates a weird divide for anyone using the stairs. i think a 4x6 with the 6 going parallel to the door would work well and then no custom sizing.

I think I would replace the bench with an upholstered one with baskets underneath for shoes or ?? You don’t want this to become a cluttered drop place. As for the chair, have fun with it as the area needs some color. More colorful rug too!

  • last year
    last modified: last year

4x6 placed for size. had it pulled out from the door slightly, but the toddler had other ideas. too small? need 5x7? 6’ round?

  • last year

I like the smaller size rug.

The coat tree looks tight in the corner. If you will use the coat tree, is there room to move the console and mirror a bit to the right to make the coat tree more easily accessible? If not used, consider removing the coat tree.

It looks like you need more shoe storage as the bench shelf and to the right of the console are filled with shoes. Do you need both a bench and a chair in the entry area? Consider replacing the bench with closed shoe storage. IKEA sells a closed shoe unit.

Thanks!! I’ll be moving or donating the coat tree, and i’m revamping my mudroom (as well as retraining my family to put. their. things. away!), so shoes out in the open will just be temporary!

  • last year

Haha good move on retraining where people leave their shoes. I have been trying too with some success!

  • last year

I really like your entry now. Yes to remove the coat tree. If it was my home, I would get a 6 ft round rug to break up the squareness.

  • last year

I like @Stacey’s idea of a 6’ round rug there. Found all of these on Etsy.com. First one is made of jute and comes in other colors.

    Oops - second one.

Other looks in round 6’ rugs.

The one i have there now is available in 6’ round if that’s a good fit? Was also thinking potentially navy to tie in with the living room upholstery (there’s some navy in the chair too) . ignore mess, temporary. replacing light fixtures this week so stuff everywhere

  • last year

Definitely try your round one there before buying a new one!

I dont own the round version of what i have there now, so i ordered the navy round from annie selke to try first. fingers crossed it works and this foyer is doooooone!

The Annie Selke rug has openings in it. Dirt will go to your beautiful hardwood floors.

The Annie selke was too dark in person anyway! I still have the lillia but not sure I love the geometric design, so still looking for the right 6’ round
