Put ceiling light on a dimmer. Good lighting includes a table lamp or wall sconce in each corner at chest height. Lighting is often seen as an afterthought, but it's actually crucial for atmosphere. As for the walls - they need a lot of color! See if there is a local artist, or art gallery near where you live. Some colleges have their own art galleries. If you are lucky enough to have a museum in your city, check out the gift shop for art prints. Art is a very personal thing, so take your time. Don't get something in a hurry just to fill the space. Go big or go home!!! I love to bring all my color into the room with lots of wall decor. Get a print and get it framed locally with plexiglass (safer and lighter to hang). Develop a wish list for that. The room’s layout is not helping and suggest an l-shaped arrangement. To warm it up, suggest cushions/and throw, and large art to create a more congenial and cozier feel.

If interested and budget allows, I’d add a longer console/tv lowered and replace the floor lamps with side tables/lights. Maybe look on line for inspiration - I searched basement with beige couches. This pic shows a warmer feel, just imagine with items that suit your space.

It’s a good space! If you want to keep the parallel sofas, I would suggest a smaller coffee table. I’d move the sofas closer together. Lower the tv. Exchange the lamps for something shorter, with the bottom of the shades closer to the back height of the sofas. Art, art, art. Lots of color! Throws in a color taken from the art.

I like the ideas to reconfigure the sofas. Yes, the wall should have colorful artwork instead of words. Pillows add color, unless your family doesn’t like them.

I’m going to go out on a limb and suggest a more lively colored rug. All the beige and cream is pretty boring because it’s all beige and cream. Something fun and bold can make the space look better. With the price of machine made rugs, it doesn’t need to be expensive.

More looks

It seems like you could easily shift some things around in this basement. Perhaps try placing a TV, or pull down screen, where the howdy sign is. Then make an L shape with the two sofas, facing the TV. Then you could easily place some artwork where the TV currently is.
