Asymmetrical entertainment center

Recently bought these bookcases to surround our tv stand and initially the asymmetry didn’t bother me. The open left side bookcase was chosen because there’s a thermostat nearly behind it and with it being smaller, it didn’t block the thermostat. How can I make this piece more cohesive? Should I look into finding a cabinet or shelf to combine the two cabinets at the top?

Can you have made/get doors for the lower left to match the lower right?

Or, take the doors off of the right side?

My first thought is to put backing on the open cabinet on the left. My 2d thought is to remove the top shelf on the left, and possibly the top 2 shelves. I would put only books behind the glass doors, and I would fill that cabinet completely with books, some laid horizontally if need be. And then I would be very careful with what I chose to display on the left, to emphasize it is a DISPLAY cabinet, not a STORAGE cabinet. By emphasizing the different functions, I think no one would expect symmetry.

Weighty solid things should go on the bottom shelves of the left cabinet. Things with details that are best appreciated at eye level should be displayed at eye level. But overall I would favor larger objects on display and very few small ones. If you create open space on the top of the left cabinet by removing shelves, display things with vertical height, like a badminton racket, a ukelele, or a giraffe, etc.

If you are easily able to get the one with the door on the bottom I think that would be better. You could also adjust the shelves (maybe even remove one) so you could display a larger item. I like the ideas mytwo cents suggested about the books.

i would first figure out....if i wanted the tv hung higher ... and/or.. what you are going to do with the space above the tv ... and how that may solve or complicate your goal ...

how modern is the tv ... if its older .... it might generate so much heat.. IT might interfere with the thermostat ... just put your hand over and behind it after its been on for a few hours...

It's not so much the asymmetry that is an issue, it's the fact that none of the sections look like they go together. The drawers on the unit under the TV don't look Shaker, the unit on the left looks like a complete oddball. An electrician can move the thermostat if you aren't able to move it yourself. If this is the best location for the thermostat you don't want to move it just for furniture placement - I'm just saying it's an option. Sometimes the builder just puts it where it's easiest which may or may not correspond to the best location.

Are these cabinets for storage or just for decor? If you don’t need a lot of storage, have you considered eliminating the tall end units and using a longer console table under the TV? Some even have an electric fireplace.

IMO the TV stand should have just been that and no bookcases at all in fact a much longer TV stand could have been even better The TV center od screen at eye level when seated is IMO perfect height .

It looks like if you just mount the TV and match the hardware on the console and one bookshelf, then it should work out well. Asymmetry can totally work in interior design. Notice the designs we've included below:
