We had a similar issue. We hung the curtains as high as we could without the top of the curtain rubbing on the ceiling and left the empty space above the curtains as is. The eye needs to rest in empty spaces so it's fine to leave in my opinion. The rod end is flat which fit snugly by the wall Congrats on your new home.

Traditionally draperies were to hung at the ceiling or 4" above the glass. When I see them floating between the glass and the ceiling it looks odd to me. The only thing 'wrong' with the photo you posted is the draperies are stationary panels and you want center draw ones that need a rod to go across the entire window.

I think what concerns me about curtains is that there’s so little side wall on the left side. With curtains of any substance , you’ll have a lot of curtain blocking your window on that side, and possibly the other side if the rod is exactly centered . Of course the windows are wide enough that that may not bother you, or maybe you’ll be using sheers . I’m pretty greedy about window exposure so I like the rod to extend far enough past that the curtains can be opened fully.

While I like higher rods in general also, it depends on the style of the room and also, what is in the way.

In this situation, I think you will get used to drapes just above the windows.

You could try hanging roman shades or try hanging the curtain rod as high as possible since you said you really love how curtains frame the window. Please take a moment to look at two designs of ours with both options:
