I never like the dark cainets on the uppers it always loos top heavy and please post pics of the materials , colors and layout of the spac eher ein acomments DO NOT strat another post . I need to see your space MCM is what I love so this is my MCM kitchen ina 1957 MCM ranch .Waht are the floors in the rest of the house ? Kitchens are designed for function and also to work with the rest of the house.BTW my counter is Stratifacto from Abet Laminati the other pic no orange is a clients space also 11957 MCM ranch also the same Abet Laminati counter just a differen look so it gives you some idea for how to enjoy MCM

RE: black with wood ....these both look nice... some sort of white counter ...you can incorporate some veining I think. [as in the island shown in pic # 2 ]

It's true the dark on the top is an unusual choice, but I assume you had your reasons for doing it this way. I can say that most of the kitchens I see with dark cabinets have light colored counters. When you say the lowers are maple, is it a natural maple (light, unstained)? Do you have a rendering and samples of the materials to give us a better idea of what you're working with?

"black on top, maple on bottom". that could be anything. what color is the maple stain?

what's the flooring?

Is there an island or is this a galley?

is it open concept to the rest of the room?

(Gosh, pictures should would help)

is the black for the cab a stained wood, painted or a glossy or matte finish?

You could do a honed granite like this Virginia Mist (virginia black, Jet Mist)

Belevedere Granite (has the warmer tones for the wood)

Or the Calacatta Black quartz

Or the black sparkle quartz

Or, the suede finish on this quartz that is a neutral gray (I have this one in my kitchen)

that Silestone also has the charcoal or this Calacatta look

My first choice for mcm counters are the first generation engineered quartz- white background with big mica flakes. It looks like the laminate that was popular in the mcm era.
