It is a really nice specimen Debra! I would think the dicoloration is just seasonal but would not want to say for sure.

Deer liked my newly planted lemon lace sambucus. It survived and got deer pruned the next year. As it grows larger, I hope it isn't as much an issue.

Thank goodness I have no deer as it is supposedly resistant as D M says….. lol
peren, I am pleasantly surprised that it is such a good sized shrub. I am hoping the leaf discoloration on some of the leaves is just seasonal decline…..🤞🏽🤞🏽🤞🏽
Old_dirt, I did plant it outside yesterday. We have had a lot of rain recently so I think that’s good. I was hoping that they would not ship if they thought it was too late in the season and delay shipping until spring.

I see this is posted in Perennials but not in Shrubs. How much space have you given it? It's a large shrub by nature.

I have had it at old house and got new one for this one.

My experience is not exciting, shrub was weak and poor grower. New one is surviving but that about it. I do love it lace leaves and coloring.

I have one that is not doing well. It is still young…2-3 years old. I’m hoping it takes off next year…fingers crossed!

That is indeed a very nice-sized shrub! That's always exciting when that happens! Sorry, I can't help you with the discoloration question though.

I bought one via mail-order last spring. Not nearly as large as yours but it was healthy and did well, although I was a bit concerned because it had a large horizontal branch. This spring it came up nicely and filled out beautifully and that one branch wasn't as noticeable. Then suddenly in September I noticed all the leaves were off the shrub, except one or two hanging forlornly and lonesome at the top. I have no idea what happened but hoping it comes back better next season.

Floraluk2, I guess I didn’t know there was a shrub forum! Right now, it has room to grow. If it gets as big as they say, I may have to move a couple of things around. I am always hesitant about where to locate plants based on expected size (hostas included) because they do not always grow to that proportion in my yard, for whatever reasons. There is a clump of purple coneflowers next to it which I wouldn’t cry over losing or rehoming.

We're talking 5 x 5 feet for this shrub. It's a fancy Elder after all.

I bought my lemon lace quite a few years ago when I was digging up my front garden. It was about the same size as yours, and like yours it was multi-stemmed. Over the years it decided it wanted to become single-stemmed, with one of the stems dying off. So it has more of a tree form, which I find interesting because many I see are shrubby.

I have always liked this sambucus - may buy one to put in the wood.

I find mine very tricky to prune after ”trunking.” Im not sure it‘s possible to restore the shrub form yours has.
