I am a big believer in doing what pleases you-you are doing it for your own enjoyment of your home, not to impress visitors or increase future resale value. If you are happy seeing the units in that area-keep the doors off. Our laundry room is off of the main hallway. The washer and dryer are visible to anyone walking down the hallway. The LR door is never closed. It makes me happy, and this is our house. Likewise in painting, wallpaper and whatever you would like to do. You could strategically place things in front of the plugs and water shut offs-such as mini-easels with small pictures. A lot of people here will be able to suggest beautiful decorating ideas-choose what is going to make you pleased with that area of your home and go for it.
