one step tripping hazard

Our foyer and mud room are one step lower than the Main floor. I like the way it defines space to remove outdoor shoes and confines outdoor debris in that area. However, several guests have tripped up and/or missed the step down. I’ve installed a hand hold in the foyer to assist, but I think we need more visual clues. The floors are dark gray slate and the rise will be copper (currently, plywood). I’ve thought about capping the step with a thin “L” of metal - maybe stainless. Suggestions, please!
