basement paint colors

Finishing basement and now choosing paint. Carpet will be very light cream with gray specs. Wall will be drift of mist by SW. Back wall is 42 feet long and thinking of painting that Stardew, a soft blue. Is this a mistake? Should I leave all the walls neutral? Trim is pure white. Any input greatly appreciated!

I need to see your furnishings for sure. I have a really pale yellow, a very pale green and in our office a very pale blue all in our walk out basement we have tons of LED pot lights all 4000K on some seperate switches since this space is our media and games room at one end and our shared office at the other .We have some really fun vinyl flooring in the bathroom with those colors in it . The rest is LVP thta looks like walnut.

Hi Patricia. We don’t have any furniture yet. Just walls and lighting. Wondering if I should just keep it all neutral and add a blue couch instead. Painter coming next week so it’s crunch time for us. We did put in a lot of can lights and warm led bulbs. Trying to keep it light and bright

No, adding color is a good way to reign in a big wall so it feels better overall - kind of bring more in to human scale.

You might have a reason why Stardew and Drift of Mist already. I'm assuming you don't. So...

Stardew and Drift of Mist don't have any attributes in common so they don't directly relate or harmonize. The combination isn't a color scheme. You'll need to add a color to round it out to make a palette in order to make them make sense together.

Shopping strategy should be add rugs, decor, art, textiles, etc with colors from the Purple, Red-Purple (magenta) or Red hue families.

Stardew is middle of Blue hue family. Drift of Mist is middle of Yellow hue family. That's why adding one more, Purple, Red-Purple or Red makes sense.

Thank you! Any suggestions on accent wall color? I’m not good with the color wheel!

I was hoping to keep to two colors. Pretty set on drift of mist. Wide open to accent wall sugfrstion

Stardew and Drift of Mist work perfectly fine as long as you integrate stuff from one or even all three of the other hue families mentioned. It's a pretty color plan.

Exactly. Should be really pretty - and different.

Oh dear. Different makes me nervous….

😀 nah, that's a fun palette to shoot for. That'd be a fun shopping trip. Fun colors, lots of flexibility, hard to get it wrong because there is such a range of colors to choose from to elevate the color harmony dots between Stardew and Drift of Mist - and they do look good together as a pair.

We like color. So long as you have good lighting it can work

Paint all walls Drift of Mist, buy your furniture and then think about whether an accent wall is the right thing. Update your post with pictures when you're further along. I think you're putting the cart before the horse. There are hundreds of paint colors, so it's easier to find a wall color than it is to find a sofa that works. I assume you have sampled Drift of Mist with the carpet and it is a good fit.

Ok I’ve decided to go all neutral on the walls and then decide later if an accent wall will work. Carpet is not yet ordered but leaning towards a light creamy white with gray specs. Once walls are done next week there are other options for carpet color if necessary. I can’t decide what drift of mist will look like in the basement so not yet commuting to carpet color. Any carpet color suggestions from someone who has seen drift of mist on a wall would be appreciated!

Agree wth @kandrewspa - I would get my furniture nailed down and then choose paint - for our basement remodel we settled on a large sectional for the room then backed into the wall color based on the sectional (we had LVP so the floor was pretty neutral)

IMO the warm LEDs will have ayellow cast so now youwill need to remember that. I think colors areechosen by eye in a space all the formulas in the world are useless if you do not like the color. I have never used all those complicated things to choose color for myself or my clients.IN fact I find most of the time the space and light tell me what color . Maybe somehow the formula is just in my brain somewhere . Kind of like Feng Shui it somehow just happesn when you open yourself to no preconceived ideas. I ahd a wall in my house that wanted to be purple I do not like purple but everytime I looked at that wall it needed purple I finally did it and honestly I love it and I rarely like accent walls in most spaces .Just let your mind choose what you like .
