Need backsplash ideas!

Ok, we are pulling out this old black granite and replacing with fantasy brown. The challenge we are having is that while our cabinets are white… they are antique white. We have dark wood floors and a dark wood tounge and groove ceiling. I am trying to tone down the yellow (at least to me) in the cabinets

Posted a pic of the cabinets and floor, one of whole room and one of the fantasy brown that will be installed.

I’d look for a different countertop though changing the backsplash may be enough. Tape up some paper to get an idea.

I would consider changing the backsplash to a tile that coordinated closely with the cabinets and maybe not changing the countertops unless there is something wrong with them or you really don't like them at all.

Photography and color is tricky with phone cameras and screens. My SO and I can take a picture of the same room and the colors will look different in each photo. I have a room where the walls and the trim are painted the same color in two different finishes and they look completely different from each other in a picture, not not so much in real life. And the difference is more pronounced on my SOs camera. So it's hard to give advice about what goes with what because of phone cameras and computer screens variations.

Another vote for changing the backsplash and keeping the current counters. (Or at least bring in some samples to see if they would make the change that you are looking for.) I think that the backsplash would need to be changed with the new granite too- they are both very busy. (I like the fantasy brown too but I would just look into the backsplash first.)

Already bought granite… they are cutting it now. My wife said a bone or oatmeal subway tile

To lighten your space up would you consider painting the ceiling?

I agree with the advice to wait until the counter is installed and then bring samples home to see how everything works together.

When someone is trying to find a backsplash that works with different tones, I always suggest they look at tiles with a little variation. A handmade style tile or a very lightly variegated tile. Those choices will blend a little better with the differences and won't look as stark against one thing or the other.

You could also experiment with replacing your bulbs with something cooler and see if that helps tone down the yellow of the cabinets.

I would essentially try to match the cabinets with the backsplash. It could be a tile some slight variation but I would probably try to keep it close to the cabinets because the cabinets and the backsplash are essentially both vertical surfaces.

One of the things that is skewing you cabinets yellowish is the bright white trim around the doors and base and the current cool gray in the backsplash

Here's some color related references for you, may help you with the tile, will definitely help you if you are considering wall colors:

I would also suggest taking off the wall decor above the cabinets and above the window. You have plenty of nice decor at the people level and some blank space in the room gives the eye some places to rest.

I don't see yellow in those cabinets, I see green. Wait until the counter is in before proceeding any further.

Painting that ceiling would be criminal -- don't even think about it...

    Absolutely on the ceiling…

Deegw.. so nothing above the cabinets? I thought it would look to bare since the space is so big?

bwhirish - yes, that's the general consensus. You don't have to decorate every blank space in a room.

When the people level is fully decorated, which yours appears to be, the open areas near the ceiling will look light and airy and not bare.

People sometimes add decorative things near high ceilings but it's usually one big piece in a room bigger than yours and not a row of smaller things.

Is your wife looking at the same granite you post?

I would advise you to not look for a backsplash until after the counters are installed. I have no idea how those courters are going to interact with your cabinet color. I would not have selected this granite.

This was kind of the idea

Thank you…. The actual cabinet color is listed as ivory… do you think the cabinets match the granite?

On my computer, the cabinets don't Not go with the countertop. I think there are enough shades in the stone that it will be fine. As I said above, hard to know online. The door does not look as yellow at the granite place as it does in the house.

People are inprecise about color names , and color names are imprecise as well so I would not get too hung up on what a color is called. But in general, to me, "Oatmeal" is a bit taupeish which is more pink than yellow in the light brown range.

Fastest update to that kitchen is to remove all decor above 8’ and remove all signs and decorations at the counter level. The kitchen counters should only have things on them that are actually used. I agree with the others that backsplash selection needs to be after counters. I would love something that blended with the cabinets but had some highlights that matched the brighter white of the trim but I have no idea what that means

I like a warm gray with Fantasy Brown and white cabinets, but you might want to pull a different tone from the stone that plays nicely with the off-white that you have. It might still be gray, but you might want white, or you might want a cream very close to the cabinet color but with a little texture.

A pale green could be lovely too, or a taupe -- again, depends on your particular slab.

Also, i shoud say that, whatever the tone of the cabinets might be, because it's blending almost perfectly into the walls, it's not dominating or distorting the space. So don't sweat it too much. You could even consider painting the door frames in the kitchen a color that matches your walls, rather than the white, to remove one source of "clash"...

ACM - is that bottom pic ivory cabinets? Looks so

My fiend has a white kitchen and Fantasy Brown countertops. They are tricky to match a backsplash to, so I would make sure the slabs work with your ivory cabinets. From what I’ve seen of FB, ivory may look “off” with some slabs that have a lot of white in them.

You can’t pick a backsplash without it being installed with your lighting on the countertop. Take your time.
