This system is R 410a and contractor is pushing to do it now before new regulations for Florida come into effect. Do I need to move fast on this?

I am not an expert of the HVAC regulations of Florida, but I am not aware of any changing that will come into effect on January 1, 2024. Did the contractor state specifically what regulations come into effect on that date? If they are new regulations we should be able to find them with a Google search.

Don't be pressured into replacing an AC which has no problems. There are no such thing as freebies in the HVAC industry. The contractor may be offering a little better price because it is the slow season in your area. Do some research before making a big purchase decision.

Your system is working fine - no indications it will need replaced soon. New system is the same efficiency as the old on..... no payback there.

I was surprised that this contractor offered the same Trane system for the same cost that my regular contractor was quoting for the same Goodman system with no incentives other than Goodman offers 10 year warranty. I never thought I could afford Trane so I never got quotes. The Trane contractor offers 3 yrs labor (instead of 1), a Smart Honeywell thermostat, a $400. trade value, FPL matching $150. discount, storm surge protection on air handler and on outside compressor and a "Black Friday" promotion discount of $390. If I sign before the end of the year. The contractor has a very good reputation, I would prefer Trane over Goodman and these incentives seem reasonable.

The Honeywell T10 Pro is a great programmable wi-fi thermostat but you can just buy one for $195.

I have a roughly same aged American Standard unit at my rental, R22 Freon full 2 stage AC 18 SEER unit, replaced in early 2008. I've replaced the indoor coil 3 times now, just the past few months noticed another small leak during a check / make ready. An assortment of dumb related fixes to the outdoor unit mostly in the realm of the use of poor controls.

Other than that a great unit. The compressors in it are the climatuff. That was when Trane actually made their own compressors. (They don't do that anymore.)

So this day an age it's really not worth the argument of what is better by a name only. The time in which the unit is made is more reflective of how long it may last versus anything else. The difference is more in the realm of what it will probably cost you to keep that Trane on the track.

All manufacturers have to be competitive for new sales. Once the warranty period ends that's when things tend to go south with certain brands. All manufacturers for the most part play this game to some extent. I can't say Trane is the worst (cost of parts out of warranty period) --- Carrier for my neck of the woods isn't one to make things fun.

Assembled in USA. < This only goes so far. Trane is no exception. I'd take a unit that was made 20 years ago over nearly anything made today. The problem with that equation is that a normal life range for AC in a hot climate (a climate that uses it alot in terms of run time) is typically around 15 years at best, even worse if it requires alot of refrigerant to fix it (can make it not worth repairing). In an era of banned refrigerants, this will only get worse it only matters if a leak is your problem and that is a bit more likely today with newer equipment, regardless of the brand. A name doesn't stop breakage.

To clarify I've had a number of change outs this past year where the evaporator coils were at or above 20 years old at the time of failure. (some are still going, very few make it this long)

They weren't all Tranes... a name brand doesn't really grant you anything in the eyes of an AC repair man. They all break. (inflationary costs have driven prices for all brands Goodman and others aren't immune to inflation.)

Unless you call a Trane dealer who has been baptized in "Trane can do no wrong" and you have any other brand at your house, they are more likely to convince you your problem is the name on the side of the box. Brand bashing isn't real service. I've repaired an assortment of brands (of the lesser known quality) that I probably should have just talked them into replacing... but doing that too much people catch on really quick when everything turns to replace this, replace that on speed dial if you catch my drift.

So given that... nothing really wrong with Trane, except that it seems to me that you are placing it on a pedestal above that of other brands. Trane is nothing special, just a choice among many. Goodman makes more efficient units just as much as Trane does. Goodman has units upper models with 10 year replacement warranty and lifetime compressor warranties. Trane doesn't do that. All to often people don't compare apples to apples because they simply do not know.

If the only reason a company can sell something is because of a perceived "deal" it's rare that stands the test of time. A common answer to questions I ask on a repair call... "Oh, yeah we got this unit xyz years ago because it was such a good deal."

You know like why am I here versus the guy who sold you the unit?
