Deep Sofas in Small Space Help

We have a smaller sitting room off the kitchen (14'2" x 13'3"). We end spending a lot of time in this room even though it's smaller so I want comfy coaches for our family. The only way to work the space is to have 2 couches facing each other. I love the Kipton sofa from Arhaus. I'd like to update our 2 different sofas to 2 matching Kipton sofas. At the showroom we all really liked the deep sofa (44"). I'm concerned they may look odd in a smaller space yet can't get over how comfortable they are.

IMO too deep for the space but play with some boxes to get a feel for how the walks space and legs space .

I pulled out our current couches and it seems fine. My concern is that there's a difference between pulling out smaller furniture vs having the acutal large pieces in the room. I would just buy them but Arhaus has an awful return policy which makes me hesitant.

Floor plans are undervalued and extremely helpful. If you have graph paper, sketch out the room with openings, etc. and then sketch in the sofas. Make sure you have plenty of clearance for walking, end tables, etc. There are also many free versions of floorplan software on the internet. Ballard designs has one. 44" seems really deep. Unless you or others in your family are very tall, I wouldn't think that you'd need something that deep. I also believe that Arhaus is overpriced for what you get, so I would keep looking. Patricia's idea to put boxes in that are that size is a good one. You can also get blue painter's tape and tape it out to see how the clearances work.

If they are very heavy and take up most of the space, especially if “ tight” regarding the entrance to space, think about how you will clean in there without hauling everything out, too… where? And barely any room for a table.

Just looked at the Kipton and it doesn't look like a bulky sofa or visually heavy. The frame and arms are streamlined and you get the most out of the available sitting space.

If you pulled out your current sofas out to where these would be, that should have given you a very good idea of the space that will be taken up by the new ones. If it seemed fine to you and the family, then that is what matters. None of us are going to be able to give you a definitive answer without complete measurements, floor plans, sight lines, etc.

Just looking at the sofa area here, don't see why yours couldn't work. Use a narrow upholstered bench/ottoman as the coffee table.

Can you describe what made them so comfortable to you? Perhaps you can find these qualities in another sofa. How many other stores have you visited to sit and try?

Two identical sofas across from each other is a great look in a large living room, but I think it is a lot in a small space, even if they are more slender sofa. If you really want the 44" sofa, get it and place a complementary but smaller sofa across from it. It might look better than two of the same. Or, get the 44" sofa and get two comfy arm chairs to put across from them.

I agree, Arhause furniture isn't the best quality for the price.

Google British snug rooms. They are cozy, small space for chilling out and you might get some ideas.

On the site it says you can get the 40" depth as well.

My sofa in my family room is 40" in depth and it's very comfortable.

If you need boxes - go to Walmart. There's no need to order them.

You need Arhaus to do this for you! You are buying from them. I have them do a floor plan or have them have someone come to your home. Crate and barrel have come to my home.

Thanks! We like the deep vs standard because they are so comfortable! Our family always ends up in this room even though it is smaller and awkwardly shapped. I have sadly come to terms with this and comfort is the top focus. BUT I still want it to not look weird of course. Here is the Arhaus design and one I did on the computer with the couches in the room to measurements. The weird spot is a fireplace.

Will you be adding a coffee table?
If it’s too narrow for a coffee table, consider an ottoman. It will save your knees.

Is there a TV involved? Do you want guests to sit comfortably? I’m 5’4” and could not sit on a couch that deep.

This could be a wanting to have your cake and eat it too situation.

Line up a bunch of chairs and/or put in a sofa and pull them up to 44" away from the walls and have them face each other. Spend time walking in and out and sitting with a bunch of you in there. Did I calculate correctly that there will be about 33" between the two?

If you end up deciding to go for two Kiptons, purchase one first, get it delivered and use it for a while. You'll have a feel for whether you want a second one in there.

Lastly, how wide is your door and can you fit a 44" deep sofa through there?

I think you're right about ordering only 1 and seeing how it looks. They're on sale now which I hate to miss but it may best to try that first.

Oh, and there were would be 82" between them if they are both against the wall. I'll probably have them and inch or 2 away so more like 78" or so between

If they will be custom covered, you need to buy them at the same time. You need the fabric to come from the same lot. I would think….. I had custom leather chairs done and bought both my chairs at the same time.

A mathematical genius I am not! 82" is a decent amount of space. They may still look clunky or odd, but at least .you won't trip walking down the aisle. Perhaps you can get one extra deep and one standard and just have family members who are in the dog house sit on the standard! Forgot to put the toilet seat down? Forgot to take out the trash? Go sit on the standard!

Or, is it possible to have them in an L shape or would that block a fireplace? Is it a fireplace that you even use? Doesn't it have a mantle?

I have two gigantic sofas that I planned to use in different rooms but they wouldn't fit through the door to our den so they are both in our living room in an L shape and I love them. It is a nice configuration for visiting and hanging out.

I'd also try to employ good rules of thumb for any room you are trying to make look and feel bigger: paint ceilings, trim, and walls the same color. Hang curtains wide. Use mirrors strategically. Reduce clutter.

@Kendrah, I love these ideas! Do you think a deep and standard of the same couch would look okay facing each other? That might solve my dilema. We can't block the fireplace because we do use it and the room opens the other way to the kitchen and can't block that way either. I can definitely reduce shelf clutter to help though.

I think it is fine to mix a standard and an extra deep. Most people probably wont notice and it may be more pleasing to the eye than two deep sofas. My two matching black sofas in my living room actually don’t match. They are two black MCM vintage sofas, each with a tight back and row of buttons. But they are from different companies and one is likely from the 40s and the other from the 50s. I think they look great together even though they are not exactly the same, and I’ve never had anyone raise an eyebrow, even people I know would comment if they didn't like the look.

170 inches minus the depth two facing 44" Kitpon is 88 inches minus 36 inches total for space to reach a cocktail table from each leaves a cocktail at as much as 48/52 " wide!

    What is the issue?

And four inches will matter how?: It won't

Look into Burrow, Bludot, Joybird, or Castlery, they have some pretty deep small couches. Ifound this thread to be quite useful.
