I like the idea of adding some warmth to the space with wood but it looks like you already have a lot of linear geometric design elements. Can you post a picture of a wide view of the room and wall so we can see the entire space?

IMO the wood slats clash with the black design you already have. Instead, I suggest a wallpaper that incorporates the black in that area. I would also consider painting the shelf black.
