If there is no structural reason to lay the floors one way or the other (sometimes there is based on the joists and the subfloor) then you should do what looks best to you overall.

With a long hall, you may have tradeoffs. It may be that the short boards across the hall make the other rooms look so much better (especially the rooms that are open). Or it may be that the running the floor lengthwise in the hall only impacts the other rooms a little bit in your mind.

And it is permissible to turn the flooring at a doorway to a bedroom (presumably the doors will be closed when guests are in your home). And it is not the end of the world if you change directions at the entrance to the hall.

Aside from going perpendicular to the floor joist. Flooring should run along the longest length of the house.

Example: 40' x 25' , flooring should be laid along the 40' dimension.

Most single residential homes are wide at the front with a short depth like the example above. Flooring will always run from left to right.

Condos, townhouses and multi families are narrow at the front and deep towards the back. So, flooring runs from front to back.

Having a continuos run is the best look and more budget friendly. It provides a faster installation since, there is no change in direction. Which means you are not setting . up a new starting line or layout. You are also, using less waste because there are less cuts along the narrow dimension of the rooms or house.
