Does this work?

I moved into a new home and I am trying to mix new and old belongings. Does this chair look ok with these drapes.

The paper shade is coming down.

Is there a rug or other patterns in the room?

There will be a rug. It is at the cleaners now. Here is the rest of the furniture

Yes, I like the chair and the drapes together. The blue ties them together ... but since they're both patterned, be careful with additional pattern. And I'd like to see some red as an accent. Or yellow.

    Thank you!

    What color rug?

Yes if you can move the patterned sofa far away from the drapes - creating more balance of patterns across the space

The chair in front of the drapes is a chair and a half. The rug is blue, gold and white. I am having trouble posting a picture. I will keep trying.

Since your photo doesn't provide a complete view of the room, I'm guessing on some of the details. Get the chair in front of the window, not the column.

    Thank you!

I moved the chair. Still need to get art work and tables.

Once you get the rug and coffee table in place, you may need to pull in your chairs to make it a bit cozier.

Are you used to having the TV over the fireplace? If not you may find it is unpleasantly high to view there. A common recommendation is to have the TV at eye level - when sitting down. If you want to try that, and get the designers' feedback, please make a drawing of your main living space, with dimensions listed for walls, windows, doors, all the details and maybe a photo or two to the right and behind of the sofa.

I like it. I like the pattern-on-pattern look. I follow a bunch of IG designers who are doing stuff like this, like Heidi Callier. Wondeful change from the all-white trend.

    Thank you!!

I like it, too... YAY for some visual interest !!! 🙌 🙌 :) But if you ever wanted to play down the pattern mix, you always have an option of adding a fabulous throw on the chair.

What I would suggest is that you also bring the color and visual interest to the other side of the room. Instead of all the matching throw pillows -

maybe add some in a solid color and/or other patterns.

What kind of rug do you have?

I am not a fan of the patterned chair in front of the draperies. I would place the matching swivel chairs in front of those windows on either side of the fireplace. And the patterned chair at a right angle to the sofa. AWAY from the draperies. I would also remove your patterned pillows from the sofa. They add nothing to the room. Start with a beautiful rug…and go from there, choosing accent colors from the rugs. Good luck!

Thank you all. I have been following the advice of a designer from the store because I am insecure in my choices.

The patterned chair in front of patterned drapes is fine. It is good as is - or you could add a throw. I could see a beautiful throw maybe in a light to mid-range blue - maybe velvet. What color exactly is the chair? Hard to get a good read on it on my screen. If the store designer recommended all the matching patterned pillows - I would opt out of that.

Not a fan of the mismatching patterns. It's fine to mix patterns, encouraged even if you can do it artfully. These two patterns however are too different in style and color---they clash.

Need to see the rug as I am assuming it has more patterns.

Your chairs would look less busy if you placed them facing each other couple feet away from the windows.

Your sofa seems to be the old item, your curtains new_ if you're open to getting new curtains, that's a better option.

I would put mainly neutrals and one accent color to prevent all the patterns from weighing heavily.

I think it would work with the right styling.

Can you move the TV to the other large wall? Maybe move the furniture around to accomodate viewing.

Thank you all for your input. It has given me much to think about.

The OP’s situation is really not anything remotely like this ...

But you would think that it was - based upon some of the panic stricken comments...

I like how a blue throw works with the overall room.

I attempted to draw in a throw. Keep in mind, I am not Picasso. :)

I think it looks nice. I would go with it.

I really like the combination of prints on the curtains and the chair. You may end up with an interesting artistic interior. At the moment it is very important to see the carpet, so I won’t suggest anything specific yet. Only, perhaps, I would swap the patterned chair with the gray one that is in the corner - in my opinion, a large chair at the entrance to this area narrows the passage and a smaller one would be better there. In turn, a large armchair in the corner will balance the sofa (a small chair in the corner looks cramped). Place a floor lamp behind a large chair.

A large piece of art in a wide white mat is a must on the wall. The windows (all) have white accordion blinds.
And of course, to link the prints of the chair and curtains you need an “intermediary” - most likely a pillow. Unfortunately, I can’t make a full-fledged collage without a carpet (but I really want to, because I liked your room)). I hope the carpet comes back from dry cleaning soon)

I think the drapes are really nice and the chair works, but it will be important how the entire room is pulled together (your rug is a major component). At that point, test different cushions, art and accessories to create a nice connection. It’s hard to tell without rug and tables, etc. but the seating/layout feels off balance. After you have everything in place, maybe take another picture for feedback.

Have you tried the matching chairs on the sides of the fireplace. This will create a more balanced focal wall and help off set the large tv.

Chair placed on a slant on the wall, but you’ll need to experiment with accessorizing. With chair being further from drapes, patterns are less of a concern, if you are unsure and it also will provide more comfortable seating for viewing tv.

The design of your curtains has Moroccan Trellis in it with shades of blue, yellow and off white. Your big armchair is more traditional with a floral pattern. Typically, quatrefoil patterns tend to go better with modern or transitional styles.

Traditional is a unique style on its own where it already does most of the heavy speaking.

HOWEVER, it is your house; your choice.
The underlying basis of what this room can become is an eclectic design.

Here's a render of some ideas:

Coloring the fireplace mantel wall in a light blue or green would tone down the business of some of the patterns but let their colors shine.

Move the TV somewhere else and replace it with a painting or mirror. Add some candles or plants to soften the room.

Since we don't know what rug you have, I added a plain jute option and a Safavieh Traditional rug. Once the rug is chosen, the rest of the room can be put together.

I used jewel greens and blues from your armchair (and curtain) to place a green pillow on the armchair, and a throw as another complimentary color.

Yellow can work but most of your colors are blue and off white. Green pairs well better with blue in traditional designs. I placed a yellow pillow in one render too so you can compare.

I replaced your Moroccan Trellis type curtains with Thibault Curtains from a seller on Etsy. They have similar colors but a more traditional pattern and toned down to fit next to your armchair.

although I used a yellow pillow, the green one would fare much better, as shown in the second to last photo.

Adding traditional touches around the room (frames) can help create a traditional/ eclectic look.

And yes, that armchair has your current pattern on it.

IMO get that TV off the FP to start. I am not a love on mixing patterns maybe because I am a minimalist . I do not think those work together and they honestly fight . I love the chair fabric and IMO a nice soft blue faux silk drapes would be my choice . I do need to see the rug to have any other ideas .

Thank you for all the wonderful ideas. My rug comes back in two weeks and I will repost then. I am Moving some blue drapes into the room and giving the chair and a half to my son. As for the tv, that is out of my control. My husband has strong feelings about his tv. I appreciate any and all advice!!!!

Gosh, if you can only convince him to move the TV to the wall where the 2 chairs are - you would not have this huge thing looking at you.

    last modified: 2 years ago

TV is huge, it dwarfs the fireplace and to me looks ridiculous there.. He can still have his huge TV but above a suitable sized console, can he not? Love your curtains!

I love your curtains too, and think they look just fine with chair. Other posters have given some great advice on pulling in some other colors in throes and pillows to unify it all. As for the TV issue, I feel your pain. I know sometimes it can be hard to have to butt heads with SO on things like furniture placement , color of walls. etc etc. Maybe someone here can do a mock-up with TV console so you can show him how it could be done a little differently and give him a visual.
Good luck with the project. I think you’ll end up with a lovely eclectic room 😊

Look at Grand Millennial style for some fun and inspiration. I think you may find some ideas there that resonate. https://www.amitabha.studio/design-blog/grand-millennial-style-how-to-incorporate-it-in-your-home

No one knows where the best place for a tv would be, because all sides of the space have not been seen. And i don’t really know if the tv on that far wall would be that much of an improvement, aesthetically; the tv in that mockup above is about half the size of your actual tv.

If you leave it over the fireplace, you could look into the Mantel Mount. https://www.mantelmount.com/

Love the article on Grand Millennial Style. I will show my husband the mantel mount. Thank you! I realize the tv would be able to fit on the other wall and I thank everyone for their input. However, this is my husband’s house too and after 37 years I do know what battles are worth picking and when to wave the white flag. Thank you all!

There's always an alternative, but Mary didn't provide us yet with other sides, we have to go with what we're given.

As for the TV, in the render it is not half, but a 60 inch TV I used as an example. Mary's might look to be a 70 or 80 inch tv . Regardless of size, the point was to show the TV in a better location.

But here ya go, I put a 146 inch behemoth for you. That way her hubs can open the front door, sit In the neighbors yard and still have a good view of the TV...

If the TV is staying where it is, then let's all focus on a rug, patterns, chairs, tables and decor

    Thank you!

I think the chair and drapery are fine together. I would try to avoid having all the bold patterns in one lump at the side of the room though. I'd like them balanced around the room, which may happen once the rug is in place.
