Kenmore Elite washer

The washer always shows a F20 code when large loads are washed. Smaller loads are okay, Could I need a new pressure switch? How can I test the round pressure switch?

    Cenzo, "Kenmore Elite" is a marketing label. Kenmore appliances are sourced from various manufacturers, Sears doesn't itself make any of them*.

    As BobA1 advises, the model number** should always be cited for any appliance problem question. The effect without a model number is like calling a car repair shop about a problem and telling them your car is red or blue or whatever color ... which is what happened when an acquaintance once approached me at the local grocery about a washer problem. I didn't expect her to know the model number so I asked what's the brand to narrow the choices to at least that level. She pondered for a moment, said "It's white."

    * The first few digits before the period on Kenmore appliance model numbers is a code for the source manufacturer (syntax of xxx.xxxxxxxx).

    ** The complete model number from the tag on the machine, not an abbreviated reference from the instruction manual or a catalog/stock number. Some people have cited the document number of their insruction manual, which is not a machine model number (and user manuals can cover multiple models).

    110 is code for Whirlpool.

    F20 basically is failure of the pressure switch to register water filling to the target level within 13 minutes during regular operation (or 6 mins depending which tech document is referenced). Or within 30 seconds during the Diagnostic Test program.

    Have you tried running the Diagnostic Test program? Do you have the tech sheet?

    The difference between smaller and larger loads is that larger loads, of course, absorb more water so a longer fill time is involved to reach the target fill level to trigger the pressure switch.

    You might disconnect the water supply hoses from the machine and check the screens in the inlet valve ports for accumulated debris that may be obstructing the water flow rate.

    Water flow rate would have to be severely restricted for fill failure after 13 minutes.

    It doesn't seem likely that the air pressure tube that connects between the tub and the pressure switch is obstructed, as that would probably affect all load sizes ... but you could disconnect it from the pressure switch and blow into it to clear a possible clog.

    There are six wire terminals on the switch. It apparently has four levels: empty, normal fill, overfill/flood, and (over)suds. The wiring diagram on the tech sheet for your model isn't fully clear on how the terminals relate to the fill levels.

    I have checked the screens and the water flow rate into the machine. The screens are clean and the flow of water for both hot and cold are strong into a bucket. I have to find the paperwork for the machine. I don't know what the Diagnostic Program is and have to research it to apply to my machine.


    You state the air pressure tube connected between the tub and the switch is not obstructed since it would affect all size loads. Would a small hole via vibration affect all loads small or big?


    I will blow into the tube to determine whether there is an obstruction.

    Regards to a pressure leak, small loads would fill more quickly to the target level, perhaps fast enough that the pressure leak wouldn't affect the initial fill. Pressure loss later during the wash period would/should trigger a refill to top-off the level and reactivate the switch contacts. The number of times a refill occurs may be related to whether or not a fault code occurs in that respect. Surely, examine the pressure tube for a pinhole or breach.

    The tech sheet for your model (which also covers other models) outlines these steps for the Diagnostic Test routine.

    1) Close the door.

    2) Press Power.

    3) Select Drain and Spin cycle.

    4) Unselect the rinse option (on Kenmore models).

    5) Select No Spin (for the spin speed choices).

    6) Press Prewash or Steam Treat or Steam Clean or Deep Clean (depending which button is on the machine) four times within five seconds.

    7) The test cycle should begin.

    8) Press Stop to cancel the program before it otherwise ends.

    A service manual for a different model that takes a different pressure switch by part number, although both have six terminals and reference four levels, outlines this for testing it directly. The trick is blowing/holding the correct pressure to trigger the various levels. L1 is the normal fill level. Terminal 4 is the common for empty, normal, and overfill (see diagram above).

    The terminal combinations may or may not be the same on the two switch part numbers, yours vs. the other model of the service manual.
