Rug rabbit hole! Help!

last modified: 2 years ago

I just got a new dining table and I love it!!! Im 80% sure ive picked the chairs (debating 5) , but now ive spent the last two days if my life looking at rugs! 🤣 help!

its a 54” round light wood table, and i am pretty sure a 7’ round or square would go best. the walls are a soft off white baby blue. Anyone have any ideas on type, style and color of rug? someone recomended jute but im wondering about lack of contrast and cleaning.

my house is open plan with boho beachy vibe in the rest of the house. the mirror in the pic is getting painted cream.

    Pretty dining room!

A 7’ round rug is too small. Ideally the rug should extend at least 36” beyond the table edges do the chairs remain on the rug when pulled in/out and when someone is seated.

thank you! i was afraid 8’ would swallow the room cause it would go all the way to the buffet table. but ill look again. any ideas on color/style or pattern of rug? thats teally where i am lost. someone recommended Jute - but i am thinking thatbis too similar in color and hard to vaccum

I would be inclined to find a new place for the mirror and get some fabulous art in the space. You don't want to use the art that's leaning on the island?

What art on the island? i dont see it…

oh you may be looking at the waterfall countertop?

I like your room without a rug. A proper-sized rug will take up the majority of the room. If you use the sliders doors to the outside a lot or grill outside, the rug is going to be subject to dirt/drips/trips from traffic.

Consider a flat rug with pad for indoor/outdoor or for high traffic areas. Something like the Safavieh cape cod collection jute rug with natural and blue colors, below, may work.

Use a rug website tool where you can upload your room photo and virtually try different rugs.

I completely hear you! thats my issue - a rug will take up the entire room - but it just looks naked without one. the sliders go to a front deck that is not used as much as the back deck. but the pantry on the left is used 20x times a day. i like the rug you picked! do you think the green chairs will go ok? and round or square??

Check out Safavieh’s Cape Cod collection on their website as there are rugs that skew greener. You can try ordering some samples or smallest size to see them in your room with existing/new chairs.

I like a square/-rectangle best but it‘s a personal decision. The virtual rug tool will let you try both shapes.

Here’s another cape cod collection from their website that has more green:

Thank you, i do like their rugs!!!! - but im back to my size dilemma with them - only available in 6’ or 8’. 6’ is too small, and 8’ is too big :( further down the rabbit hole i go. ugh

You need the chairs to fit on the rug when someone is seated at the table.

Ideally that means having 3' of carpet on each side beyond the edge of the table

I don't know that your room is wide enough to have a round rug that reaches 36" around the entire perimeter of the table. (10' 6").

You cannot go 7' square or round and sit down without the chairs falling off the carpet. It is only 15" past the edge of the table.

9' Round area rug would be tight, but is probably okay. (27" on each side of the table.)

8' Square could work if you turned the table and placed the chairs so they were angled toward the corners.

Test it out. Have your family sit at the table and pull their chairs out and get up from the table without pushing the chair back in. Measure the distance they need to push away from the table without having the feet fall off the carpet.

You might want to visit local oriental rug stores. Hand knotted wool rugs tend to come in more unique sizes and you might find something that fits your space better.

Based on your outside foliage you might be in FL, which sadly means you might not have a great selection of local oriental rug dealers!

I'd choose a Square very light background patterned rug... like a faded border pattern to LIFT the space.

If you get armless chairs, they won’t have to slide them out from the table real far. Also, if you put everyone on a strict diet, they’ll slim down a bit and won’t take up as much space at the dinner table and you can get the rug size you want.😉🥂

NO RUG.......but replace that mirror with some art to add texture and color.

Also, turn your chairs and table diagonally. It will provide you with more space around the table

I'm not sure the white drapery panels were the right call for the room. I would like the tie top tab faux linen drapery panels in your space.

You have a lovely dining room with beautiful floors. A rug is not needed to define this space because it is enclosed by walls. A rug under the table makes the room a bit stuffy and harder to clean. I’d just place a runner at the sliding doors and occasionally rotate it so it wears evenly.

So true about stuffy. That’s exactly why I returned a round rug and decided to go without.

I'd go for jute. I have one, my dog and husband are not particularly clean beings and I have had no problems with keeping the jute looking nice. I would not be concerned about lack of contrast. First, there are varying shades of jute so you can find one that might have a bit of contrast. Second, I think your home, while beautiful, is a bit busy and having less contrast will make this end of the house more tranquil feeling.

The waterfall slabs have a very assertive pattern, so assuming they are staying, I would keep any rug very simple. This is a 9'9" square.

Just because the table is round doesn’t mean the rug has to be. You can do a custom size so it’s exactly the size you need.

I would forgo the rug for all the reasons people have already mentioned, and just change out your drapes to something with slightly more pattern, texture, or color. Once you have something on the table the room won't look bare.

This isn't your rug, but this is an 8' round, clearly too small:

And an 8' square (better; still a bit skimpy to my eyes):
