dining wall dilemma

Having a little dilemma with this wall, I’m not quite sure what to do with it as much as I would love to do a feature wall with some cool paneling it’s just not in the budget nor do I have a handy enough husband to do it. Lol. I love my dining room table and fond of my light. The green cabinet in the background is one of my favorites but I feel like there’s something more I can do with the wall. I was thinking of maybe putting a couple small wine racks on either side of the photo on the wall but I just need some better ideas on what to do with it and maybe how to decorate it. I’m not married to the colorful picture in the background either.

Can you remove everything except the dining set and the cabinet? Then we can see if it is too small or can be worked with. How far is it from the table to the wall behind the cabinet? Take out the art, the little shelf to the side of the cabinet and everything on top. Plus you want to lower the light to about 30" above the table.

How many of you eat regularly at this table? I'd keep four chairs at the table. Use two of the brown chairs to flank the sideboard. Get a large piece of artwork the width of the sideboard plus chairs. Lower the light. Also, do you love the color of the sideboard? If not, I'd paint it a more subdude color. The dining area is really chill and the sideboard is loud. It feels imbalanced to me.

Paul F.'s mockup is good. It shows what you really need here--fill more of the wall's width for balance. Your current cabinet and art are both too narrow. You mentioned adding wine racks on each side of the cabinet--might work, but potentially very busy. A single wider piece would make a better statement. Above the new buffet you could do a large piece of art, a gallery wall, or an interesting object collection similar to Paul F's picture.

I think you need larger or more art. (less stuff piled on the dresser)

What is on the wall of the dining room where you are standing to take the picture?

With your current console, you could do a color in the niche. BM Vintage Vogue might be one possibility.

No wine racks. Wine should not be stored at room temp. A larger sideboard would look nice.

Omg I love the idea of painting the wall darker. I’d love to do the panels. That would look amazing. The crap on the sideboard and the little cart on the side are just my kids things and can be removed. The sideboard is about 4-4.5’ from the table. I agree the color is too bold and the piece is just too narrow for the wall now that I see the mock ups. My walls are painted SW repose grey. Any suggestions on what color work with it as an accent. As far as the side where I’m standing taking the photo, there’s no wall there. It opens up to my former living room. That room is just one giant room with 25 foot ceilings. One side is the living area and the other side is the dining room. It’s very tricky to decorate.

The sideboard you selected to too short for that wall. You can visually lengthen it by adding chairs and artwork.

A longer sideboard would really work better on that wall.

I’d move the art to a smaller wall and it will be better appreciated. The cabinet (which I assume you want to keep) will also look better by balancing wall/offsetting its size and rethinking accessories.

Paul’s version nailed it! And yes to lowering the light.

My goodness I love the sconce idea. The cabinet I’m starting to think is much too small for the wall. I brought it to this home from another home that I used to live in. So I might consider selling it and finding a larger one. I’m thinking of purchasing some of this premade molding and then installing it to the wall. I’m digging the look and the sconces would look nice

I would think about where else you can use that board and batten. Dropping it in just one place is potentially not being cohesive with your overall interior. Maybe at the entry too?

Yeah you may have a point there. That wall just feels like it’s missing something in general. The entire rest of the room is a big wide open space with 25 foot ceilings. There is one area near my stairwell that I have a gallery wall that I could possibly put the board and batten there, but I do really like the way the gallery wall looks currently

If any of you were to change the light fixture which kind of fixture would you go for? now I’m rethinking the whole thing lol the light fixture is hanging from 25 feet above so I wouldn’t be able to change out the whole thing maybe just disconnecting the chain and the actual wiring and then replacing the fixture itself

For anyone curious how things are going so far…. Here’s a picture of my progress so far. I added picture frame molding to the wall, the two wine racks on either side, the really big photo in the middle. I plan on painting the credenza a soft, black color. and plan on either replacing the light fixture but at the very least lowering it. I’m still looking for a rug to go under the dining room table.

Like what you've done with the wall. Any thought of toning down the green of the chest, taking it more toward the smoky blue/gray in the artwork?

Yes I am planning on painting the cabinet a soft black color.

@simplynatural I do like the idea of a Smokey blue color. I have nightstands that I painted a color similar to

Sorry, missed your earlier comment about painting it!

No to the premade moulding. great idea to do a larger console

I like the picture frame molding and art work but I do not like the hanging wine racks.

Large original artworks are an excellent addition that gives character to any space. Good luck and enjoy decor !

Creating an impactful dining space doesn't require major renovations. A gallery wall with a mix of art, mirrors, and floating shelves adds depth and personal touch. For a pop of functionality, a sleek wine rack could complement the space. A larger statement piece of art could also serve as a focal point.
