Is it wood burning ? Has it been checked to make sure it functions? If yes to those then I would change the mantel and the hearth stone I see none of the decor you mention on that mantel right now so maybe post a pic of the room . I would not paint the stone if that is a wood burning FP for sure.For me boho and MCM are the total opposites so I need to see the sapce . Post the pics here in a comment DO NOT start another post.

A chunkier stained wood mantle and a less ornate fireplace screen would be a big improvement. I think the stone and hearth are relatively neutral and could work with almost any decor.

Is this your decor or the decor of the previous owner? I do not see anything boho or MCM about how the fireplace is currently styled.

My question is how does the current appearance of the fireplace fit in with the other details of the house? Not how it's decorated, the architecture itself.

Fireplace was inspected and does need repair. We will not be using it as we have one in another room which we call the "family room"

This is a ranch where the front door opens directly into the "living room" and this is where this fireplace is so it just needs to look "pretty" or as pretty as it can until we decide to repair or update to gas.

Under the carpet are pristine red oak floors that have never seen the light of day so good bye ugly carpet.

All the molding in this 2200 sq foot home is original clamshell so that is staying too.

This is more my style. Sofa, console and accent chair are more MCM to me and the rug and pillows lean boho.

Oops one other thing, ceilings are low only 89 inches so low furniture is a must.

I'd pull up the carpet before I make any significant changes. Red oak can be bossy and may dictate some of your choices.

I wish there was a name for the decor style that combines MCM furniture and boho textiles. I think it's a pretty common choice but is confusing to explain.

The decorative screen is terrible. Replace it with a simple screen that mounts within the fireplace and draws to the side for access. Minimal and simple.

The least expensive solution is to simply paint it all black.

Wonder if once mantle was removed you could create a box and add wood slats. Paint the narrow stone a greyish black so as to fade into the hearth.

I agree that waiting until you uncover the floor and then see how things look and ditto on the chunkier mantel. You may end up painting the mantel if you don't want to remove. For now, maybe leave as is until you paint. A large artwork piece or mirror and less small objects on the mantel would look nice too. I like your furntiure choices - it is going to look great. MCM meets Boho sounds good.

Many mid century homes have fireplaces that are the same brick or stone as found on the exterior of the home. They help marry the interior and exterior. Since this is the fireplace guests will see upon entering from the outside I would not think about changing the stone if it matches the exterior of the house. If it doesn't, I still think it is a very attractive fireplace so I wouldn't be in a hurry to change it.

I grew up in a house with a fireplace very similar to this. There was a screen like Beverly suggests. The bottom hearth was some kind of polished, lighter stone which complemented the surrounding stone. The top was also stone, but not polished. I think it was one long piece, also in a complementary colour
