Bed location for Primary Bedroom

last modified: 2 years ago

Renovating the primary bedroom. It’s quite long but narrow (12’ x 20’)

Would you keep the bed where it is? The other option is moving it to tthe far wall where the dresser is.

Pictures of the entire room would help you get advice.

without seeing more, I would swap the bed and the dresser.

then swap the tall cest of drawers with the dresser. (taller of the two between the windows)

If you center the bed on the wall where the dresser is, how much room is on either side? Will a night table block access to the door closest to the corner? Maybe you don't need a big night table, only a shelf on the wall.

Measurements of the room and the furniture will help. Do both those doors go closets?

Stand in each corner of the room and take a picture of the opposite corner.

If there is room, I think it would look better moved to the solid wall.

    Thank you.

The bedding isnt the bedding we will use. It‘s just on there as a spare set.

The far door against the wall goes to the bathroom. The middle door is a TINY walk in closet. We need the dresser for space

I like your Hemnes dressers. I liked the idea about one set of curtains, but I think the simplest thing is just to get a much lower headboard. I think it would be nice if it were white to coordinate with the other furniture.

Consider placing the bed so that when you enter the room the bed welcomes you, it is not crosswise. Hard to tell where the door is, but you may already have it in the best spot.

Move the bed to the other wall. Place the white dresser between the two windows.

Is that a Queen size bed of a King size?

    It is a King

Illustration if the bed stays where it is: lowered headboard, widened drapes (added panels) that back the whole width of the headboard, larger nightstands centered under windows, accessories.

Currently the strong color is all on the window wall. That would need to be balanced by adding color (art?) to the wall with the doors. Asian scroll paintings are good for vertical spaces, such as between the bathroom and closet doors, and some come with green silk framing that would echo your wall color and draperies (see a couple of examples below). They range from very inexpensive (like these) to very costly, depending on age and quality. Families often have more than one and rotate them.

Incidentally, are the taped(?) lines on that wall marking a TV location?

The plan was to buiid a fireplace on that wall. Are TVs ok in tbe bedroom?

A lot of people have tv in bedroom, however it’s not recommended by sleep professionals. Bedroom for sleeping and sex🫣!

I would not put the bed on the dresser wall. Being in close proximity to the bathroom with the lights, smells and noises in my face would be unpleasant.

I never understand putting a bed on a wall that blocks the windows. I like to wake up and look outside to the emerging world. And open them in good weather. However your room seems to present a problem with a king bed. My preference would be against the wall where door opens back on. Then you could put tall dresser opposite for the TV and short dresser between windows. Also wall farthest from bathroom. Might allow for a comfortable chair in a corner. Just may not fit. If must be on window wall then as others have said a headboard below the windows. Can be white, upholstered, or any color that complements the white furniture. Not dark wood as the only wood element in the room. I assume keeping furniture, it is fine. Must change your overhead light, anything would be better. The room seems dark, lighter paint. Of course decluttering/organizing and somehow places for shoes, laundry baskets, etc. that are disguised if not room in the closet. Have fun and enjoy your changes.

The bed on the dresser wall looks like it will be squeezing the doors on the left side. I would leave it where it is.

Please post a graph paper, measured layout of the whole room with windows and doors indicated. That might change everyone’s answers.

Patricia Colwell I love the bedroom you showed. Do you know where the bedding etc can be purchased?
    Thank you

I'm fine with a TV in the bedroom, and a fireplace would be very welcome in winter. I would want a color softer than black for that area (a creamy stone, maybe?), but the inspiration picture might be only for the arrangement and not for the color.

We really like the look of these accent walls? Not possible?

With a King size bed you don't have any other option but the layout you presently have.

I do suggest however that you buy an upholstered bed (shown here in greige) - on Wayfair) which would work well with your white furniture. I'm presuming you'll be keeping your curtains but have hung then differently (use 2 panels at each end) on a long rod all the way across and added natural fibre roman shades to the windows. You have space for a bench at the end of the bed or you can buy a white floating wall shelf for a TV on the wall facing the bed. You also have space for a comfortable chair and live plant. I also suggest you paint the room in something like BM Natural Cream but wait till you buy the upholstered bed and test the paint in the room first.

The sketch show pretty much with your existing linen but I suggest you buy all white linen and your your duvet cover folded across the end of the bed with a few accent pillows. Of course you can bring in a more colourful scheme if you change the duvet cover and curtains.

Sure, you can change the color scheme, and if you do this, then the dark fireplace area would make sense. I assumed the current wall color and draperies were staying.

    Thank you.

New paint, curtains and bedding are all in the plans

The biggest wall for bed. If u move it. Narrow dresser between windows. Long dresser between doors.

Here's another take on your bedroom with the fireplace you're thinking of...

@Chris: You've gotten superb advice from Patricia, lisedv, Beverly. They didn't suggest accent walls or TVs or fake fireplaces. If that's what you're after, then end the posting. You have a layout situation with brillian solutions above. Fix that won't need an accent wall or whatever else you think will fix it.
