Redesign Off Centered Office

last modified: 2 years ago

My office furniture is big so throws things off a bit especially my corner cabinet (17" deep x 46" wide w/ crown on top x 81" high) and love seat (42" deep x 66" wide). I use the current cabinet for storage. I am definitely keeping the desk (30" deep x 56" wide).

1. How would you change the layout?

2. Would you paint the corner cabinet?

3. Or put in built-ins along the back wall? (Window to wall is 23") Do they need to match shelves to the right of the window? I love the idea of navy shelves or white with color on the back of the shelves.

4. Would you keep this carpet I just bought? It is serene and safe, but I also found a green patterned one that looks fun, but I'm not sure of the pattern in a large scale.

5. What window treatments would you recommend? It faces the front of the house. Front facing windows upstairs have wood blinds.

Thank you!

Given the shelves already there, would you add built ins? Or should I paint the corner cabinet and try moving it to where the current couch sits? And put couch in front of the desk? Or turn desk to face the window?

The placement of the framed photos isn't working if they can't be over the sofa. I moved the desk to the other side of the room for some balance.

First I would get rid of the gray paint. I prefer the green rug so would coordinate a new wall color to complement it. I would put loveseat on the far wall and face desk to the window. What's in the corner cabinet? Do you need it? It is large for the space. Yes paint it? Do 2 people ever use the loveseat? If not switch out to a chair. Floral panels for windows.

Judging by your photos, it seems this home office space is open onto your Entrance so I guess not easy to change the colour of the room as suggested by someone else above.

However, how about a layout like this and bringing in a few more feminine accessories?

nice room! The grey doesn’t work with your warm furniture however. i also second the idea of a chair.

Step one is to determine a functional layout. Can you provide dimensions of the room? Size of the desk? A floorplan with all measurements is best.

Can you tell us how the current desk location is working for you? Do you need the desk to be centered in the room or would it be just as functional and comfortable for you to be facing a wall or facing toward the window?

After the room layout / furniture placement is done then we can address colors.

Thank you, everyone. I'm open to painting the room! I purchased the green rug, and it seems I need a lighter wall (almost white; wonder if accessible beige from fourier will do). The green is light but almost a primary green. If I like it, I still need to find the right size, bc the rug is only 8'x10.' Regardless, I do feel the walls need to be a different color for the current rug. Suggestions? Hallway and dining room are SW accessible beige. Additional pictures of fourier and adjacent dining room on the other side of the stairs. Again, thanks so much for your input. (Smaller chairs or a bench? would make it less bulky.)

    Dimensions:

Room is 11'6" wide x 9' heigh x 13'9" deep (along the window)

    Corner cabinet (17" deep x 46" wide w/ crown on top x 81" high)

    Love seat (42" deep x 66" wide)

    Desk (30" deep x 56" wide)

I'd move the couch along - looks like a comfy basement couch, perhaps? Paint the room, do wooden blinds like the rest of the front, and have a good reading chair/lamp.

Which rug looks better? I prefer the green and white, but I can't tell if it's the current furniture colors that don't look right with it...

I do prefer the view at the desk facing the window instead of the stairwell and side view of the window.

    Definitely the green & white

The lighting in here is poor, but it's not easy to get the electricity run up there. Has anyone ever used a battery bulb for a light fixture overhead?

I think your last picture is the best layout

I would move the big corner cabinet to the other end of the room (across from the shelves and move the little round table to the corner where the big cabinet is.

I know they aren't exceptionally popular, but I would get a torchiere style floor lamp if I needed good lighting and couldn't add ceiling lights. I have lived in houses without ceiling lights and a light that shines on the ceiling and reflects into the room can provide a lot of light.

I love the green rug, but it would require that the walls be painted and I don't know how well it works with the rest of your home. The other carpet is nice and works beautifully with the wall color and furniture.

Maybe I missed it - is this an office in which clients/guests are received? So they need a place in which to sit and visit with someone behind the desk? Or is this a one person working from home office?

The couch is lovely but I’m not sure of its purpose here.

We bought the couch years ago at a sale, and it's the only room that we have for it. I work from home in the office, but it is only used for family...

This arrangement was suggested, so here it is. i will keep the current rug and get a smaller chair. i do have two small swivel ones from homegoodss and can put them in fromt of the desk. hopefully, it doesn’t look as tight as the loveseat in fromt of the desk. I have been looking for shelves with the bottom closed (you can see the binders I had to remove from cebinet to move it on the loveseat.) what color would you do? white, navy, or black? run along entire back wall? does it matter that i have those open shelves to the right of the window? I’m not sure how much they need to coordinate. I would not even care if they were all with enclosed doors. It might mean less clutter on the open shelves. i could do something tall on either side eorh something low in the middle, so I can add artwork.

I like your last arrangement with the loveseat removed. Alas, because I really like it. It would be great in my living room. 😁

The last view makes the gray walls appear very dreary. Did you say your other rooms are accessible beige? I’d continue that color in here.

    Lovely home!

I would remove the sofa unless you use it daily for your work. After all it's not a huge room and to have a piece of upholstery taking up valuable space if you don't need it it kind of wasteful.

After removing/relocating the sofa, I'd move the desk catty-cornered facing the window and foyer opening.

But if you have the budget, you might want to consider having built-in cabinetry made. You seem to have a lot of books that have no home right now.

Here are the before and afters of a home office I did for a client. The room is bigger than yours, but it seems so much bigger now, and works for husband and wife.

Thanks Diana. If I corner the desk, where do you suggest I put the built-ins?

Does the cabinet fit facing toward the desk or is it too wide?

You can replace the corner cabinet with shelving, you can re-home the sofa, minimize the furnishings, if you are ready to give them up. I go through my home and touch my belonging and decide if they are still bringing me joy. It doesn't matter how much the things cost, it matters if I still love them. Some things (especially things I had that were my mom's) took a long time to be able to let go, even if they weren't the perfect fit in my home.

I think when we are young we struggle to acquire things and then we transition to a place where we have enough stuff and keep acquiring new things and have to change our mindset from gathering to replacing or reducing. You may or may not be in the place where you can let go of the loveseat. If not, keep it.

If you can measure the room and all the windows and doorways, along with the dimensions of the desk and tall cabinet, I could give you a better idea of what would work.

Could you try the desk against the window looking out? It would give your loveseat more breathing room.

Any color suggestions for the wall? The fourier, dining room, and hallways are agrreable gray. The family room and kitchen are anew gray. Thank you. Agreeable gray would be beter for the current rug, that I kept. I took the green rug back even though I loved it. It wasn't large enough; need 9' x 12/13' instead of 8' x 10.'

Agreeable gray works in most rooms, which is why it is so popular.

I may want to add just a bit of color to the walls, but everyone likes something different and many people paint the whole home one color.

I would probably lean toward a grayish green - but more green than gray - Clary Sage, Escape Gray.

Green is also a great color for an office or workspace. It balances productivity and a feeling of well being.

What is the purpose of adding more chairs to the space if you aren’t receiving clients in the room?

Sometimes, the kids or my hubsand will come chat with me there...I like having some seating

    last modified: 2 years ago

Knowing how your workspace functions and having it meet your needs is far more important than someone else liking or disliking the loveseat in the space.

How is the revamp going. Are you happy or still have questions? Would love to see final pics.

Until I find a piece to replace the storage piece, this arrangement seems to best balance the furniture.

    1. Would you hang pics on the same wall and just recenter? Would you reframe the wicker frames to a white matte and black frame?

    2. We need privacy, but I don't want to pull anything away from the extra trim we added. What would you do? Linen curtains with oil rubbed bronze or pop with champagne/soft gold rod?

Office Off Centered · More Info

Ideally, I'd coordinate the same color rod for the rest of the first floor for the dining room window and the family room window...all soft gold rods (I do have gold accents in family room in pictures).

The frames are fine but don’t hang those pictures just yet. The sofa is really too big for the room. You need two smaller chairs facing the desk. Match the window treatments to whatever you have on the other windows facing the front of the house. Your woodwork is lovely, by the way!

(I bought a candelabra chandelier for this dining area and drum light for family room. I'm also ready to replace this kitchen set, so planning doesn't need to include the lighting in the kitchen or family room or the table...considering a bench seat for the half wall with narrow table to extend island, but I'm not sure if that's too tight.

Agree that the sofa is too big! Keeping my eye out for a couple small swivel chairs @ homegoods?

    last modified: 2 years ago

I had a Sherwin Williams consultation yesterday. With my fourier being agreeable gray and this room only getting afternoon sun, think I should go with City Loft which is a couple shades lighter than agreeable gray? Or just do agreeable gray? Or silver strand? The touch of femininity in the color

    evokes more calming emotion.

A couple of swivel chairs would be perfect! In addition to looking at HomeGoods, check out your local consignment stores as well.

Would you paint the corner cabinet?

I don't think that's a good idea since it looks like a authentic one. In my opinion, painting might ruin its original look.

Totally agree that the desk needs to face the window. Then you can center the couch and art work. Remove the tall piece at the back. If you need storage, then place a low wood cabinet or low bookcase across the back wall in same wood as the desk.

Add bamboo roman shades like this in same color as wood finish and sofa.
