Advice for washable runner for dining room

last year
last modified: last year

We had to take up our rugs because our six-year-old Lab started soiling them. Then, our other dog developed a fear of walking on our wood floors. So, we put down bath mats to accommodate him. A trail of bathmats is not a good look. So, we want to replace the mats with a long, washable runner. Eventually, we hope to put back our carpets.

The seat cushions are the darkest navy blue with gold thread.

We'd appreciate your advice on color, style, and brands.

Take a look at RUGGABLE's website, they have a very nice variety of patterns and colours, all machine washable/dryable.

Is there a way to have the rug and block off access to the dining room for the naughty Lab? They sell invisible fence type products that can be used indoors to keep dogs off furniture and out of rooms.

We took up all our rugs. If we block off the dining room, our dogs will walk through our living room. Our Lab hasn't had an accident in several weeks, though. So, we have hope we can put the rugs back someday.

Consider a larger cheap spot cleanable rug for under the table that extends over to the canine pathways. It might look better than runners. (Indoor-outdoor rugs have come a long way.)

A trail of rugs for an older larger dog is a kindness. They are not built for slippery floors. One leg sliding can lead to a host of orthopedic issues they may never fully recover from.

Annie Selkie has a new line of machine washable rugs. Lots of pretty designs and sizes.

We had areally expensive shag rug and our old dog started havin accidents o the rug we sent it out to be cleaned 3 times Like over and ove with no trip home Our old guy dies d we broght back the rug got a ew puppy promtly peed where the old guy had peeded their sense of smell is awesome no amount of cleaning took it away. I think just do what you are doing for whatever works IMO .Have you looked at Chilewich they are just hose washable and maybe a bit less likely to hold the smell.

Six year old dogs do not soil the house out of naughtiness, they do so because of a medical issue. Or the inability to be allowed outside at least three times a day. Time to call his/her veterinarian.

If you are truly looking for something mat-like, a ruggable makes sense in theory. BUT the rug part (the washable part) is very thin and it wouldn’t take much for urine to penetrate into the rubber-ish pad underneath. Which is not washable.

We ordered a runner from Ruggable. It's returnable for something like a $18 shipping fee.

Hopefully a lab is outdoors running around all day long, and not in the house much. Sporting/working/herding breeds need tons of exercise and should rarely be in the house. It goes a long way to keeping them mentally and physically healthy.

The rubber underpad is thick enough for urine not to pass through but of course although not machine washable it's easy to wipe it clean. No matter what you buy you'll still have to clean what ever underpad is there.

Thanks for your concern about our PP pup. She has access to a doggy door which opens to a fenced in yard. She had.a mast cell tumor removed from her leg a few days ago. Maybe the cancer led to her having accidents?

She probably wasn't feeling good. I bet that was the problem and she is embarrassed when she thinks about it now. :)

I love these pix. Your dogs are adorable. My house decor is eclectic but leaning traditional. I'll check out your suggestions for other rooms.

Thank you! Your pup is adorable and I’m glad you got the tumor removed. Keep us updated if you get any new ones and how they hold up!

Rockybird, I have often wondered how room size rug can possibly fit in a household washing machine. I would consider an indoor/outdoor rug. They can be hosed off or power washed, weather permitting. Sam’s Club and Costco offer them for a reasonable price.

More likely her leg still hurt: ) Get a dog walker for a couple weeks,,,,,take her out mid day when nobody is home and you take her out when you're home. Even if just to the back yard.

Pics are great and pups are adorable! Of note, the outdoor dog is exercising and the indoor dogs are lying down. If you count the steps (use a pupometer) it’s obvious that dogs who are outside for 16 hours a day or more are 1,000x more active than a dog that spends 10 hours a day or more indoors.
