Without more info on your space, it’s difficult to reccommend specific lighting. I looked at your idea books and see that you prefer modern, so I just wanted you to consider using linear lighting over an island instead of pendants. In some situations, pendants add too much visual clutter.

I generally think lighting is way overpriced and either overly gaudy, very retro, or just plain boring. I did find a "do-it-yourself" mix-and-match at Lowes a couple of weeks ago for pendant lighting. You choose the hangar and the globe separately. You have to be careful on this but I have used a nice beveled glass exterior hanging fixture in a bathroom setting and loved the look so keep an eye on fixtures in other departments. I agree LED is making some of the ratings less important but there is always a possibility someone will replace an LED bulb with incandescent so keep that in mind. LED's also give you some new options like filling non-glass items (like buckets) with LED bulbs so you can create your own look if you also find the commercial offerings dull or gaudy.

Thanks for the comments so far. At this point we have ideas on the looks/aesthetics we’re going for, but we’re more wondering what suppliers people are using to balance affordable prices with a minimum level of quality and safety.
