Leave the cabinets as is. Get a light floor in a warm taupe stone look and a soft white countertop. Your big problem is NOT the cabinets but that you don't have any overhead or under counter lighting. You need both. In fact I'd start with that. It will make a big difference.

The door style on the uppers and the flat wood crown is really dated. It doesn't look like you have any or very many base cabinets with drawers. Newer kitchens use a lot of drawer bases which are so much more useful. Painting isn't going to change that. I never think it's a good idea to put expensive new counters on aging cabinets. If you think it will be forever until you can do a remodel try to keep the countertop replacement inexpensive. Look at Formica and plain white Corian. It does look like a good sized kitchen and you have some nice appliances. I also don't mind the checkerboard floor. If you like it, no need to change it.

If the boxes are in good shape you might reface rather than paint if that is in the budget.

I like your kitchen. For a refresh I'd change the hardware to something lighter like brushed nickel. I'd then repaint the walls something lighter. I'd leave the cabinets alone.

If you are really dead set on counters and floors I disagree with white counter tops. Your kitchen has personality and that'd be dead and gone if you went with white.

you can do some serious editing and get a new look. Is there nothing about the layout or functionality of this kitchen that you would change? then remove some uppers.....get chrome or wire storage pullouts in those lowers. [ if you dont already have that] .......get lighting updated.

Once you remove some uppers and you get some wall space think about a few open shelves .Then Id search out a granite . I dont dislike the green counters but it veers too much to DRS Office lab counter or something institutional so I think granite would breath a new life into things. Price is unknown as there are various ones and would you go for cheapest..just to get a new look? sometimes people see something they fall in love....whatever the case....then see how your floor works. a new floor can be a DIY and that might be the better place for time and effort instead of painting cabinetry. The effect of removal of some of the uppers reduces the volume of the arches and that may be sufficient. Yes the arches are dated .....just have less of them. Then obviously smaller details like ..hardware..backsplash...sink.... faucet..window treatment ....etc. I would not vote for painting your cabinets.. See about a combination of other changes and how far some dedicated budget money will go. Be strict in that regard as it is an older kitchen.

this remodel involved working w the ASH cabs..bringing in some new pieces and matching the existing stain..maybe they put the hood on and added island..Im not sure ..... a few new things obviously with floor counter etc.....but the possibility of a hood for example if you want to reach for something different.....maybe new doors on top if you really want to eliminate the arches....the point being stains can be matched by experienced teams.

Checkerboard is back! So is wood. And green. But that doesn't mean that I'd keep the green counter. A nice light counter, with new lighting, is where to start.

Nice appliances and strudy looking cabinets. Don't paint the cabinets. The arches are what dates the cabinets the most and they are less pronounced in wood. When you paint the cabinets the arches will really become a very visible design element.

Get white corian counters. Paint the walls the same color as your counters so there is no contrast between the two.

I love your checkered floor. I'd get one in white and beige instead of green and white.

Find less cluttered window blinds.

I agree with others that you may have too many uppers, making it look cramped. Maybe the uppers over the pass-through next to the fridge can be removed and the opening expanded?
